Simple fix for odd File > Edit in... choices greyed out after updating to 2.4.0

Recommended Posts

Background: I updated each of the three V2.3.1 Affinity apps one at a time as I normally do, via clicking on the 'Update Now' button in the Affinity Store versions that pops up notifying me that the new versions are available. After each of the downloads completed, one at a time I clicked the 'Install & Restart' button & everything worked as expected -- each V 2.3.1 app quit & automatically restarted the new 2.4.0 version

Everything seemed to be working well except that when I opened an existing native Affinity format file in APub & used File > Edit in Designer..., after Designer opened the file, its File > Edit in Publisher... was greyed out, so there was no way to go back to APub, other than to close the file in AD without saving & reopen it in APub.

I soon discovered that if I opened a file in AD, both edit in... options were greyed out & at least one of them was greyed out in AP as well.

I eventually decided to quit all three apps & after relaunching APub the problem disappeared -- all 'edit in...' options in each of the three worked as expected after that.

So basically, even though each of the apps had restarted automatically after updating them, it took a second restart for the edit in options to work.

I only mention this here because I wonder if anybody else saw anything like that or if it was just me.

😮😮, Yep seeing the same thing on Windows 10

Correction, I don't think it is happening on Windows. When I tested this I grabbed one of the Sample files. Of course when they're downloaded, they reside in a protected area under the .affinity folder. I just tested using one of my project files, the Edit in is available.

Thank you for letting us know the fix for this, we are currently investigating this issue so we don't have an internal bug report just yet but I'll update this thread once we do.

Thanks

If Publisher restarted before Designer and/or Photo restarted then they would not have been run at least once. So restarting Publisher after the other two should facilitate Edit In, and it did. I am not sure this is anything other than expected behaviour. Perhaps the Photo and Designer apps have to run and exit before Publisher runs and "sees" them, but I do not think so. We can check that too.

Each of the three V2.3.1 apps was updated individually, one at a time, so each was restarted automatically & running the new V2.4.0 before the next one was updated. APub was the last to be updated, so at that time AD & AP were already running V2.4.0, although they both had no document open & were hidden via CMD-H.

Regardless, since all three were running V.2.4.0 at that point, it makes no sense to me that 'edit ...' worked in one direction only in APub (to either AD or AP) but once in either of those two Edit in Publisher was greyed out, or that starting with a document open in either AP or AD Edit in Publisher was greyed out.

Yes I suspect Photo and Designer have to run and exit before the functionality works correctly. That is not ideal if true

So in Mac speak, you mean first quit if or when it is currently running & then relaunched
