Suggestion : Color wheel fill default (Designer)

Recommended Posts

Clicking on the color wheel is a very common action.

It would be nice not to have to always check if the focus is on fill or stroke.

It could be like this :

Default click on color wheel = Always fill color
Alt+click or right click on color wheel= Always stroke color.

A nice usability detail that would increase productivity
Could work on swatches too.

Xara uses this approach (left click = fill, right click = stroke). IMHO it is very quick and becomes muscle memory very quickly.

This has been requested several times before...

There are issues of consistency if the same approach were introduced to Affinity... Not all mice have right click. Can you right click on an iPad?

Also, Swatches panel already uses right click to bring up a menu.

So, sadly I can't see Serif implementing this.

Exactly !

The Adobe fill/stroke protocol switching is often a distraction, it's freeing not to think about it.

Details like this amount to productivity in the long run.

It could be implemented just as an option in preferences.

I enjoy working Affinity Designer, there is some innovative and clever aspects in the workflow.

I can say that in the heat of the moment, I often end up applying the color to the wrong attribute (stroke or fill) because I'm not paying full attention to which of the two is on top, and it's equally frustrating every time.

Fundamentally, there are two distinct approaches to the color palette, where Serif has taken a stance from the beginning with Affinity, and I've never envied CorelDRAW or Inkscape for theirs. But neither have I found contentment in Adobe/Serif's method, which often requires extra clicks just to apply color to something. Over a week, those extra clicks add up significantly, and one must always keep an eye on which is on top, hit the tiny icon above stroke-fill or press 'X' on the keyboard.

Essentially, the left-right click method probably works best with CorelDRAW's principle of a narrow color palette that is always visible on the screen.

Like @GripsholmLion I'm not convinced or satisfied. I'm looking for some new ideas in this area.

I am unconvinced.

Also - for example when using a tablet, the "necessity" to use a modifier key (require keyboard control) is annoying.

I suggested, too, left/right click for fill/stroke color long time ago and I, once again, want to emphasize how important is this as a time (and nerves, too) saver expecially when working with plenty of layers.

Exactly, in long sessions in can get annoying for such a low level action.

As mentioned, it would be an option so it wouldn't affect other patterns of working, It would just add a straightforward productivity detail.

Maybe an indicator could be added to the mouse pointer when over the wheels showing a filled rectangle or an outline to indicate whether the fill or stroke is being set?
