Dotted line layers won't unlock on Publisher 2

Recommended Posts

Publisher 2.0.4 on Mac.

In the master page I cannot unlock two dotted lines. I've tried clicking the lock on the layer and at the top of the layer as well as clicking unlock with right click on the layer and from the menu. Nothing. History says it's unlocking but it's not releasing it. My other locked layers will unlock and relock.

They are grouped so I ungrouped them. Nothing. I closed and reopened the file. Nothing. I closed and restarted the program and reopened the file. Still locked.

Help?

Can you provide a screenshot of the complete application window, including the Layers panel, to help illustrate your problem?

Interesting. I haven't seen anything like that before.

Can you share the .afpub file with us?

@Shemja

Did you copy those dotted lines from another document?

If not, can you recreate this situation in a new document by repeating what you did in this one?

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

No, and if I copy them into another document the lock is released to function normally.

No.

Long story short, I got around it by copying and pasting the lines into the same document and deleting the locked ones. No problems after that. I just wish I knew what happened so I don't accidentally do the same thing again. Maybe it was a fluke.

From my cursory examination one thing stands out. The lines are "dotted" lines, they are made with a Brush. I have no idea what brush. Regardless, that should not affect the locked status problem.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.4
Affinity Designer 2.4.1 | Affinity Photo 2.4.1 | Affinity Publisher 2.4.1 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

The curves forming the dotted lines can be unlocked either by choosing Layer > Unlock All, or Layer > Geometry > Divide.

Interesting ... but neither should be required to unlock those 2 layers, so there is something very weird going on that prevents a simple click on the Lock icon in the Layers panel from working.

The design is possibly an imported IDML template created for InDesign so the objects involved are not "native" in that sense and their attributes are somehow confused. The affected lines are originally probably true vector brush strokes which are converted to a bitmap based Affinity vector brush. Though this is technically one curve object, its locking resembles that of a group of objects each having an individual locking state which cannot be changed, either, by changing the locking state of the parent object. Applying Unlock All or Divide (or copy pasting) "normalizes" the object and as a side effect corrects the attribute confusion.

I made the lines with the pen tool and in the Designer persona applied the "Dashes 1 - Anti-stretch" brush from the Fineliner brush pack out of the Affinity store.

Thanks.

And you created them directly on the Master Page? You didn't create them on the document page first, then copy/paste onto the Master?

Ok, thanks, so basically native graphics, then. Perhaps involvement of the brush pack might then explain the attribute confusion.

Correct.

Then it's still unclear what's happening, as that brush does not have that effect when I try it as you described.

I didn't have problems locking and unlocking when making new lines with the same brush, or even copying and pasting these. It's just these particular layers. I'm going to chalk it up to a fluke isolated to these layers and hope it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for all the troubleshooting help.
