Hi all,

I have been experimenting with different techniques trying to create decent looking pet portraits with photo manipulation only.

I’ve been following a plethora of tutorials on YouTube etc on how to create painted look / cartoon styles from a photo but I can’t get close to what I’m trying to achieve. ( Please see photo attached )

I really like the look of this particular style I came across in the attached pic.

If anyone thinks they can recreate this style I’d be more than happy to buy you several coffees for a written tutorial or video.

Hoping you can help.

Many thanks

Paul

I think you can get close by using a bit of Median Blur, Contrast filter and then an unsharp filter.

In case this is of benefit, if you are on Windows, you can also install G'Mic as a Photoshop plugin into Affinity. It has a plethora of filters... you might try editing the photo before-hand in order to control the end result. For example: blowing out whites and boosting contrast like in your reference.

Jixipix do a plugin for Mac called Spektrel Art.

You can also use G'MIC online although the interface is very clunky, on Mac you can install G'MIC to Gimp but not Affinity Photo.

Here's just for fun an APh only approach (...meaning no third party tools/filters are used) ...

I've just reused Smadell's Graphic Novel Effect macro therefor and my once upon a time made mate colored Xmas mug mockup. - Of course all parts (macro + mug mockup) used can be adjusted to own needs here in terms of colorings, contrasts ... etc.

Have you considered asking the person who made the pic how it was done?

@Red Sands, you seem to be missing the point by a few miles:

recreate this style

Here's a tutorial that goes in this direction:

> scroll to "3. How to Create an Oil Paint Effect in Affinity Photo"
The key trick seems to be the multiple application of Denoise.

One has to say. 😳

Well, @Paul240zif you're also interested in the image's general appearance, then I gave you something to go by too.

Your instructions are good for prepping the image for filters later, so still applies imo. The image I gave an example of was not high key and it added more dark tones than were in the original image. While some may not be hardcore photographers here, it can be appreciated that a well-prepped image can make a world of a difference in the end result. Especially when going for something not too too computerized but fitting within a certain motif. Then the filter is not wasted, is just a supportive element, not making up the picture entirely.
