There are several such UI glitches with the Light UI mode.

MacBookAir 15": MacOS Ventura > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // MacBookPro 15" mid-2012: MacOS El Capitan > Affinity v1 / MacOS Catalina > Affinity v1, v2, v2 beta // iPad 8th: iPadOS 16 > Affinity v2

Found it. Selecting the key object by opt+clicking on canvas is not possible when 'Allow selection to consider items inside a group' is enabled. Smells like a bug to me.

True, the problem is that :

Since we cannot see the status of that button image.jpeg.8d9ce7c2e79f217db9894f2e48b2f101.jpeg because it doens't stay grey when it is active, we don't know if we can use or not the "option + select" method.

And as @,,, says, is it "normal" to be able (or not) to use that "option + select" method because of that option ? Is that a bug ?

For me using the app's dark UI, the button background is darker when enabled.

To be clear, my opinion is that the status of that option should not prevent opt+click from being effective in the document view, and I've now reported it as a bug:

I agree that's a bug, plus I think it is a bug that it works only with alignment menu commands & not with the Alignment options on the Toolbar.

It is for me as well, but (like several other places in the UI) there is no detectable difference between enabled & disabled when using the Light UI.

The developers still do not seem to understand the importance of making the differences between enabled & disabled or selected & unselected very obvious & easy to tell at a glance what state they are in! Grrr!

Maybe I misunderstand you, but toolbar alignments do make use of the key object, and the alignment popup of the main toolbar considers the key object to be the 'first selected' regardless of when it was selected.

Weird. It is working for me now but it did not seem to an hour ago. Probably user error on my part.
