So slowwww start up of Affinity Photo why?

Recommended Posts

Hi All'

Trying to work out why is it such a slow start up when 1st opening Affinity Photo? Its over 25 seconds to wait'. Now only way to avoid this is to keep the program running in the background and that's not what I wish to do. Or opening it up in case I want to use it later to save time. This has always been and issue for as long as I can remember'  On my newish Imac 2020 MacOS Monterey  Version 12.3.1.  Imac Retina 27 inch' I was hoping things would be different. But not its a slow start up and so frustrating. My Imas memory is 64GB. Graphics card AMD Radeon Pro 57oo XT 16GB.

Is this normal or is there a solution other than binning the product?

Thanks

Hi and welcome!

There can be several reasons why it's startup is slowed down, like for example ...

  1. You have a lot of installed fonts it has to prefetch on startup
  2. If the welcome page is enabled and the internet connection isn't the fastest, it idles slightly
  3. It checks if there's a previously unsaved file in order to offer a recreation
  4. The apps are multiarchitecture (fat) binaries nowadays, so there's a small delay in fetching the right architecture (x86_64 or arm64)
  5. ... and so on ...

... check on your system how other bigger apps behave when launched in contrast here, aka if only APh is affected or not.

The fonts are what came with the program?

No fonts are installed automatically with any of the Affinity apps. Sometimes fonts are included in an app purchase, but they still need to be downloaded and installed separately.

Hi fonts I'm not concerned about?

Perhaps you should be! As others have pointed out, a large number of installed fonts can have a significant impact the app’s startup time.

Did you buy it from the Apple App Store or direct from Serif? And if the former, does it happen every time you launch or only after a reboot/logout/couple of days' non-use?

If so, you might want to read some of the 130+ posts in this thread.

It may be down to an issue with Apple security and sandboxing which Serif never seem to have properly sorted out. (Every other developer on the App Store seems to have managed it, so go figure...)

It happens to me under the circumstances I've outlined above - on first launch, the application icon bounces 30 or 40 times in the Dock before the splash screen appears and the application interface becomes available.

It happens with Photo and Designer, which I bought from the Apple App Store, but never with Publisher, which I bought direct from Serif.

I would say it happens more frequently with Monterey than with earlier versions of macOS. I may be wrong.

And no, I don't have large numbers of fonts installed.

And as for "binning the product", that's up to you. Personally it's one of those things I've learned to put up with.

Affinity Photo 2.0.3,  Affinity Designer 2.0.3, Affinity Publisher 2.0.3, Mac OSX 13, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" Intel.

My initial startup, at times, can take well over a minute, but I do have several fonts which might be slowing things down a bit. I don't worry about that anymore because the piece of crap computer I have couldn't load it any faster anyway. It loads when it loads - I'm in no rush (nor is my computer), but after shutdown and reloading the time to wait is more than halved. Everybody expects breakneck speeds these days - I used to, but the reality is always different to expectation.

Good luck with trying solve your speed issue.

Some scientists claim that hydrogen, because it is so plentiful, is the basic building block of the universe. I dispute that. I say there is more stupidity than hydrogen, and that is the basic building block of the universe.

These are not my own words but I sure like this quote.

NO, the fonts are those you have already installed system wide on your MacOS Monterey system. - For example there are people who have a lot of fonts installed (some hundreds ...), which would effect APh startup times too here then.

But if other bigger apps just startup fine and fast, then it's more due to Affinity, probably due to the apps code signing process and the like.

Just for the sake of completeness, here's me launching, quitting and then re-launching all three Affinity apps after restarting my 2018 MacBook Pro:

Remember, I bought Photo and Designer from the Apple App Store and Publisher direct from Serif.

In sequence, I launch Photo (40+ bounces), then Designer (40+ bounces), then Publisher (six or seven bounces). I then quit Photo, Designer and Publisher (the dots in the Dock disappear as they quit). I then relaunch Photo, Designer and finally Publisher. On the second launches, all three apps become active after around four or five bounces.

Affinity Photo 2.0.3,  Affinity Designer 2.0.3, Affinity Publisher 2.0.3, Mac OSX 13, 2018 MacBook Pro 15" Intel.
