how do you design a circle around a shape or letter like in this sample file

I downloaded this file from the internet and would like to create my own designcircle around letter.afdesign

To help others understand the question without needing to download that .afdesign file, here's a screenshot:

Make a circle with a thick stroke and no fill. Duplicate it and offset the location, set the blend mode to Erase. Now put the appropriately sized letter underneath those two circles with a cropped copy on top of the stuff. Group the four of them to ease moving it around.

Because in my opinion it breaks with a coloured background.

I was able to recreate your design using parts of your design. But I was not able to create that circle.

 

I would really appreciate if you could show me in more details how you created that beautiful circle.

@anemoshere's how to do it. 

If the background is colored, group the two ellipses together before setting the blend of the top one to "Erase" so as not to pierce the rectangle
