Affinity Publisher: completely avoid any hyphenation effect

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

In a texte, I have to use long URLs to display image credits. They are several lines long. How to make the software go to the line only when it arrives at the end of the line and not after symbols such as ‘/’?

Thanks for your explanations.

I could just using some sort of no-break trickery but then the line would extend out of the frame. I think you are stuck with having the breaks use the /

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

So, this would be a big bug!

Here’s an example of a link that displays correctly in Words, but goes to the line in Affinity Publisher, which makes it impossible to do a proper job.

https://stock.adobe.com/fr/search?load_type=search&native_visual_search=&similar_content_id=&is_recent_search=&search_type=usertyped&k=ob%C3%A9lisque+de+la+concorde&asset_id=49154711

I had thought about it, but it is not a solution. The link must be permanent over the years, which is not the case with shortened links. And it is imperative for legal reasons of intellectual property that the link appears in clear.

Well such a link, like the above shown one, is either way pretty unreadable for mere mortals and thus very error prone to reuse, if not handled over in a digital manner as a clickable or selectable link at all!

Depends on the service you choose, also if you setup your own service (like yourls as one of the many free ones for example) that's your responsibility then to keep it persistent over years!

This is not a hyphenation issue, it is some sort of line break issue/error.

Word 2019 handles it as expected.
QuarkXPress 2021 handles it as expected.
Any text editor handles it as expected.
LibreOffice breaks the line after the ?, so it has a similar issue, but on a different character.

You should post this issue in the Bugs forum.

@v_kyr The law being the law, the link must be indicated as requested by the rightful owners!

@LibreTrainingSo I will report it.

Both automatically divided and ones divided by manual line breaks will result in automatically created hyperlinks (e.g. the kinds Acrobat can create) becoming broken so for e-PDFs we create true underlying hyperlinks which stay operational even if the addresses are forced to be divided.

I think that's the key. You can't depend on the PDF reader to automatically create a hyperlink; you need to specifically create one yourself. And then you can let the DTP application break the URL wherever it wants, and it won't matter where the line breaks. The user will be able to click the link, or the user can use copy/paste to copy the visible URL, and the line breaks won't matter there, either, as there are no characters added.

A sheet of paper is not really meant to be clicked on, unlike a PDF. That said, I only cited the example of the link because it is the easiest to explain. There are situations, and I believe there are many, where it is mandatory to quote a text in its entirety without hyphenation.

What's about URL encoding, is it feasable in your doc to use the percentage representation "%2F" instead of "/" as a replacment?

Aka instead of ...

... then using ...

  • https:%2F%2Fstock.adobe.com%2Ffr%2Fsearch?load_type=search&native_visual_search=&similar_content_id=&is_recent_search=&search_type=usertyped&k=ob%C3%A9lisque+de+la+concorde&asset_id=49154711
