I seem to have lost the installed brushes in Affinity Designer/Photo 1.10.4. I downloaded brushes from The Shizzle and Nature packs and they are still present. In photo the tiles of the brushes are still present but no brushes (see image). In Designer after checking FAQs it was suggested that Preferences - Miscellaneous - Reset Brushes would bring them back. Unfortunately all it did was to remove the list of brushes! Can you please suggest the best way I can recover the original brushes in full. Thanks

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums.

I'm not sure what you mean by "no brushes". The image shows that there are brushes present (hidden by the pulldown). Can you give us a screenshot without the pulldown so we can see the actual brushes (or not see them :) )?

OK in Affinity photo I have a list of brush titles. The top one is Acrylics which if selected shows no brushes (1st image) as is the same for all except the recently installed Frakentoon Nature pack (2nd image). As previously said in Designer I have lost all the titles as well as the brushes when I used the brush reset option except for the recently installed Shizzle brushes (3rd image). Basically I have none of the original brushes showing so is there a way of recovering them please.

Hi Francis,

Reset brushes should be restoring all of the default brushes please could you provide a screen recording showing you doing this and the brushes not coming back? Alternatively you could open the app with the CTRL key held down and when the reset menu appears untick everything but reset brushes then hit clear. This will restore all default brushes but you will need to re install any extra brushes yourself.

Please tag me using @ in your reply so I can be sure to respond ASAP.

@Callum I have just opened the app with the CTRL key held down, made sure everything was unticked, ticked reset brushes and hit clear. Both Designer and Photo now have no titles listed or brushes showing (see images). I retried opening the app as above but still nothing showing.

Windows 10 ... Build 6.2.9200

That's a bit puzzling to me, as 6.2.9200 is Windows 8, not Windows 10.

My Windows 8.1 was upgraded to Windows 10 using Microsoft's free up grade some years ago. I don't think it has any bearing on the lost brushes issue as the original brushes downloaded with the Affinity apps were were present and working prior to the new brushes (The shizzel and Nature pack) added three days ago

Perhaps not, but it is odd, and oddities are often worth following up, in my experience :)

A very long shot, but have you either changed/deleted anything in any AppData folders, or made any changes to the Windows Registry recently?

Hi PaulED/walt.farrell - There has been no changes to AppData folders or Windows Registery. The only changes were to download the Shizzel and Nature packs which worked. The loss of the original App brushes happened after that and reset brushes resulted in the loss of the category titles  and further reset brushes via CTRL key has deleted Shizzel and Nature brushes but they can be reinstated by a further download. Is there a particular file I should look for in the AppData to check if something is missing which relates to the original brushes?

All the vector brushes for Designer are in the vector_brushes.propcol file in your user folder in the applications AppData folder. All the raster brushes for Photo or Designer are in the raster_brushes.propcol file.

You could try, with the applications closed, renaming those two files. This may accomplish two things:

  1. You'll have them in case Serif wants to see them.
  2. It should cause each application to recreate them. In theory the Reset you've done woud already do that, but this is a different way of causing it, and so is worth a try in my opinion.

Hi walt.farrell - I found the two files in the AppData folder and changed their name. I did a reset brushes again and the files were recreated but no brushes or titles of brush categories were displayed under the brushes tab when I opened the applications. Should I delete the renamed files from the AppData folder?

Posted

I would keep the files in case Serif wants to see them.

I also would not have done the Reset again; just renaming the files should have been enough.

Another thought: You could open My Account in the application, and make sure you have not chosen the option to automatically download store content. Then rename the new raster_brushes.propcol and vector_brushes.propcol files you may have (or delete them), and start the application again. Does that give you your normal brushes again?

if so, possibly it is something in the download and installation of the brushes you purchased that My Account was doing that cause the problem.

Hi walt.farrell - thanks for a further suggestion which I have just tried with no avail and further more I have just noticed that the default styles are missing from both Designer and Photo (see image). When I tried the reset style option the style names disappeared(see image). I hadn't noticed before as The Shizzel styles are present. It is possible that the auto store content option was ticked when I first installed the new content. Is there anyway that I could have overwritten the default files?

I am still concerned that your Windows system is not up-to-date. Please try something for me:

  1. In a command prompt, run the winver command and capture a screenshot of the results and show us, please.
  2. Open Windows Settings (click the Windows Start icon, then the Settings cog). Switch to Update and Security, and run Check for Updates. Also show us that dialog, via a screenshot, please.

Other than that, my only other suggestions are to rename the complete AppData folder for the application. Do this with the application closed. Right now you can find the folders by pressing the Windows key and R, and then pasting this into the dialog box and pressing OK: %AppData%\Affinity

Once the File Explorer window opens, navigate to (for example) Photo\1.0  and rename the 1.0 directory to something else, say 1.0-bkup and then try starting Photo again.

If that doesn't do it, you might try a complete uninstall and reinstall of the application.

Hi walt.farrel I have carried out the system checks (images: winvar and Update). This showed that there was one update outstanding so I have installed this (images: winvar 1 and Update 1). I'll try your next suggestion if there are no concerns regarding the windows system. I have been thinking that I may have to try a complete uninstall/reinstall as you have also suggested.

Just guessing but I think if the resets remove all the default brush & style categories then it almost certainly means the apps themselves are damaged & those defaults are missing or corrupted.

But it seems unlikely that this would occur in more than one of apps, unless maybe there is some third party add-on that somehow is affecting both apps at the same time.

R C-R and walt.farrell  Many thanks for your time and suggestions. I decided that I should just go ahead and uninstall both the Designer and Photo Apps and then reinstall them. I don't know if I had managed to corrupt the Apps during my download but I am pleased to report that all the default brushes/styles as well as the additional brushes and styles (The Shizzel / Nature pack) that I added three days ago are all present and working ok.

Which function, specifically, do you mean? There is one via Preferences > Miscellaneous. There is another via holding Ctrl as you launch the application. I have the one that uses Ctrl fail to solve this problem.
