Coming from photoshop here.....

In this image I added a saturation layer, completely desaturated and I want to paint it back in on the computer hardware. When I press "Q" the mask is just fully red. I cannot actually see my paint marks to be more accurate? How the hell do I see this!?

I don't see how Q helps here, the vibrancy layer itself is a mask. If your colours are set to black and white then use black to conceal, white to reveal, X toggles between the two. Can't you just zoom in to inspect the effect and modify with black/white as appropriate?

Ive used this same kind of thing I am requesting in photoshop with great success. You zoom in, you clearly see a red overlay mask against the image underneath, so you can paint with pixel precision. I am shocked its not a feature of Affinity

Slightly rhetorical question but, why do you assume that every feature/facility of PS must also be in Affinity Photo?

I apologise I'm not able to offer help to you, I'm very much an amateur and limited user of the software but, because of that "status" I often wonder why PS users seem to expect that APh will be, almost, a clone of PS.

Hi davidmacvicar,
Welcome to Affinity Forums :)
The rubylith overlay only works with Quick Mask mode and Refine Selection dialog. Currently it's not possible to use it for regular masks/adjustments/live filters. We already have a few customers requesting this. I advise you to add your voice to any of these threads in the Features Requests section or create a new one if you can't find any.

This is a baseline, standard feature of masking. Given that Affinity has the ability to mask, you would think this would come with it
