Affinity Photo – Activ8 issue 40 -Ghost and Castle

This is a written tutorial adaptation of a Photoshop video tutorial by Blue Lightning TV. In which I have added a vintage image of a lady and added it to a castle doorway background. Then made the lady look as ghostly as I could and try and stick to the original tutorial as much as possible.

Make A Black and White Macro from Olivio’s video tutorial

Olivio Sarikas made a video tutorial recently showing 5 different ways to make some black and white images

I am using one of those methods to make a Macro, so it will be easier to remember what to do to get the results like Olivio has shown.

Activ8 – Written Tutorial – Issue 44

Affinity Photo – Using Guide Lines to make a Squared Background for an image

This is an adaptation of a magazines Photoshop tutorial. Where I show how to recreate the magazines ‘free giveaway’ background squared images. Then follow their tutorial to add an image to that squared background to create an arty image.

Hello Carl,

I just discovered your tutorials and "Making Your Own Styles" is just what I was looking for. I wanted to save gradients. Something odd happened when I went to apply them and I thought you might know why.

When I open a blank document and place a photo in it, then click on the gradient style I created, it applies perfectly. But if I open a photo, or drag a photo into the workspace, and click on a style, it doesn't apply. When I go to the default styles and click on one of them, it does apply. I was wondering what it is about the style I created that is different and won't apply to a photo that has been 'opened' as opposed to 'placed'.

I hope you can help. Thank you.

Hi Nancy,

Not 100% sure why you are having problems with the 'Styles'. The main difference as far as I can see is the Layer types. An image added via the Place command will be an (image) layer and an image opened as a jpg will be a (pixel) layer. In theory though, both layer types should be affected by a Style. If placing an image works best use that method.

I did try the same thing on the owl image I posted above. The Style I used did affect the 'Placed, Image layer' much more than the 'Opened jpg, Pixel Layer'. But if I rasterised the 'image' layer making it a 'pixel' layer the style I used didn't affect it as much.

So, I have to surmise that Styles don't work too well with pixel layers, they need vector traits to work on, rather than flat pixel layers.

I guess some Styles will work the same on both types of layers. But in truth I really don't know the answer. Sorry

Thank you for responding. I've been playing around with some of the other styles and filters that you mention in the tutorial and have learned a lot. Affinity Photo is a great program and there is always some new technique to learn.

I am sure there must be some out there, but I don't do Designer one's as I am not that good with that program. That said, many topics do overlap or can be done in Designer or Publisher.

Short But Sweet – Issue 6

A Written Tutorial For Affinity Photo

Adding Gradient With A Mask

Rather than trying to add a gradient to a mask, which you may have trouble editing later if its needed. It is better to add a mask to the gradient on a Fill Layer. Allowing you alter the gradient as many times as you feel like it is needed.

Adding A Simple Orton Style Effect

A simplified description of the Orton Effect, is that it adds a brighter, sunnier and slightly blurred effect to an image (mainly Landscape images). This written tutorial shows a simplified Orton type effect, that you can add to your images.

Re Previous Post.........

I can see that the Vignette is a bit aggressive but its done to my tastes.

The tutorial is mainly about how to do something, not how far you have to take those adjustments. The idea isn't mine, I just passed on the info from a Photoshop tutorial. How subtle or aggressive you take the adjustments is up to your tastes, what you want to finish with and your start image.
