stinkykong
Using Affinity Designer, I'm trying to export an EPS with all vector and a transparent background. When I open the EPS I exported in Affinity Designer, there is a white background where it was transparent in the Designer file. I can change the document to transparent background but can't save the file, only export again. How do I create an EPS file to share with Illustrator users with transparent background (and all vector)?
Staff stokerg Posted January 28, 2020 Staff Share Posted January 28, 2020 Hi stinkykong, Could you attach the .afdesign file. This should work fine, i just exported a simple drawing with a transparent background without issue, so suspect there will be something in your file causing the issue. Joachim_L
Perhaps stinkykong means the document background that is/gets white, when you open the EPS? Turning this background to transparent shows that the EPS has no white background. stinkykong
I'll attach the file as an example but it happens all the time. I just started anew with a file set for web with px as unit, transparent background checked. Added content, exported as EPS with settings to be vector, rastorize nothing, don't use JPG compression... see attached. The results are nice except for the white background. Joachim, where do you change the background in Affinity Designer? I see that in creating new documents but not in editing documents. hoffLogoTest2.eps

nwhit
I have the same issue. Have a Designer 1.8.3 graphic that shows with trans background, has that set in Setup, but when exported as an EPS, has a white background. I also need to have this file as a usable EPS with transparency. How is that done in Designer? Doesn't seem to work. Joachim_L
Unfortunately I cannot use your attached EPS as there is already the white background part of your logo. But here is to export without background: Select the complete logo, then export and from Area pick Selection without background. It works as you see at image where I placed the logo in Indesign. nwhit
Thanks for the assistance! That's a well hidden method to get a transparent background! I tried that but still no luck. I still get a white background when placing the EPS in either APub or ID. I've attached the ADes file to see if there is a possible problem with the artwork. I have to say that I never had an issue like this back with AI, so am a bit discouraged that something so seemingly simple can be so complex. Again, thanks for the help! nwhit
Interesting! If I Export and select the More/Rasterize Nothing, I get a transparent background, but I also lose all the beveling and metal effects. Not really a solution if that's the only way to get a trans background. Really seems strange. nwhit
Just tried copy/pasting elements into a new ADes doc, same results. Simply cannot get it to export a correct EPS with trans. Joachim_L
Does it have to be EPS? PDF would work. I'm just so "trained" after all these years to use EPS for scalable graphics. It places just fine in APub. Just hope it will output properly without any issues when used in a printing piece. My experience is that all Fx adjustments cause the job to be rasterized, no matter whether you export to EPS, PDF or SVG. You can force not to rasterize, but then you also lose those effects. Yes, agreed. Get spoiled with the new beveling, metal, etc., but as you say, can't do that vector I guess. In the end, may just have to do a giant PNG and scale it down to size. Although I guess I then have to re-look at the limitations of PNG! 😣 Quote -------------------- iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020 i7 72GB) • AMD Radeon Pro 5700 XT 16 GB • macOS Ventura MacBook Pro, 13", M1 2020 • 16 GB • macOS Ventura iPad Air 2022
v_kyr
If you trace that stuff via some tracing tool you can get an all vector representation. aero.svg aero.afdesign Quote ☛ Affinity Designer 1.10.6 ◆ Affinity Photo 1.10.6 ◆ Affinity Publisher 1.10.6 ◆ OSX El Capitan☛ Affinity V2 apps still not installed and thus momentary not in use under MacOS
stinkykong
You can change the background to transparent and it does indeed to this but you can only save as .afdesign unless you export again which turns it back to white. I hate to say but this is really, really unfortunate.
