  1. I was initially a bit underwhelmed with Photo betas Pattern fill tool as I prefer to use vectors for this kind of thing, but just had a thought today about using Publishers Data Merge layout tool to create vector patterns and it turns out to work really well, at least for my usage - I'm not really up to the job at making tutorials, but thought I'd make a few screen captures in order to share the technique - it really does seem powerful and doesn't seem to slow down the way the old step and repeat symbols technique does First here's an earlier post from today where I first began messing around with the technique - this covers the basics of how to set up a repeating pattern And heres the technique put into practice on one of my old cartoon illustration jobs - hope someone can make use of it Pattern_test.mov
  2. Hello, I'm trying the Publisher demo to see if it could replace some work I do in Photoshop. There's a feature I need a lot in my designs, it's the Pattern overlay. Let's say I'm picking a rectangle, I go to Layer style > Pattern overlay and pick a pattern (you can import .pat files) and then this pattern is applied repeatedly to the shape. I can play with transparency, size, etc. I haven't found anything to do the same in Affinity Publisher. The Fill tool doesn't do the same.. Any idea for me, as this is really a blocker 😞 Will this feature come? Otherwise, I love the software.. great job guys. Thanks.
  3. Hi I noticed when trying to exporting one tile of a pattern via psd for photoshop CC that it got stuck on generating Export and my iPad would accidentally start heating from the app overworking it even thou it’s the IPad Pro 2018. Last night when I tried before it did that for 30 minutes. It’s really buggy since the last update and crashes even when I try to move layers
  4. Hi there! I love designing with repeating patterns. Now I found a good workflow to design and apply repeating patterns in AD. I recorded a tutorial that shows you how to design them, build a style library and apply patterns. They blend nicely with color fills using blend modes. The pattern and the color fill are in one shape, so no duplicates! --> https://vimeo.com/443692483 If you prefer the short explanation: I design vector patterns in a separate document using symbols to get the tiling right, export as bitmaps, use bitmap fills to build up a Style Library and apply those in drawings on iPad and desktop.
  5. I was asked to reproduce a geometric quilt pattern in Affinity Designer by someone who wasn’t sure where to start. This tutorial is 1 hour and 20 minutes long. It says it’s longer, but that’s because I forgot to delete some clips at the end. I’ll get round to fixing that later. The pattern is made up of pentagons and pentagrams, and consequently correlates well with the golden ratio. If you are having problems with creating geometric patterns in Affinity a Designer, this tutorial explains how some of these problems come about, and how best to resolve (well - work with) them. Here is the link to the tutorial on Vimeo.
  6. Hello, As a dataviz designer I often create the base of my works with SVGs on the web, so I can program the visual elements to be based on the data, then to import them into a vector tool for other adjustments. I've noticed that Affinity Designer doesn't import any SVG linearGradient / radialGradient nor patterns, which I do often use, so for now I can't rely solely on Affinity Designer sadly enough. (I copy the SVG element from the "Elements" section from the devTools in Chrome) I've attached a document that shows the import of the link below. All the inner curves that have a gradient in the online version are invisible (have no fill) in the import: https://bl.ocks.org/nbremer/raw/4de6f0a9d9d06373fc639e32e9c346cc/ For a radial gradient, you can try this: https://bl.ocks.org/nbremer/raw/e944485869ac8fd57413a158e9d8aae0/ which results in a no-fill circle being placed in Affinity Designer For pattern examples, you can try the following links that all are imported seemingly remaining invisible: https://bl.ocks.org/veltman/raw/57fbb830ba7e62caa46a82891168bc29/ https://bl.ocks.org/1wheel/raw/a8f39c8a96b71735488bf280d34bd765/ https://bl.ocks.org/veltman/raw/50a350e86de82278ffb2df248499d3e2/ I'm using Affinity Designer 1.7.1 on macOS Thank you! 7. Hello, Is it possible to use brush on the one selected area, but the effect to be for all the other selections, like mirroring the brush movement and effect, but inside the different selections? like on the image, this dot to appear not only for the selected area but also inside the other boxes simultaneously. I want to create irregular patterns. Is there any chance I can do something like this without using the symbols? Or Can the symbols be created after the creation of curves, like linking already existing curves and choosing one of them as the symbol? I also tried applying bitmaps to the selection but for irregular placement it's impossible. I'm quite curious what effect does "repeat" or "zero" have? Any ideas, different tools or any third-party software to reach the described results? hope my question is clear.
  8. Hello Affinity, With the help of @Old Bruce I managed to copy circles on a path, and align the circles using the text tool. It is not as user-friendly to modify the space of the circles using the characters tracking. It is like a sort of a hack way to aligning shapes to paths. I thought it would be nice to add a separate feature for aligning shapes on paths. Also add the pattern feature too, so we don't manually repeat patterns. I know I ask too much but you guys are awesome. Thank you, text-path-align.afdesign
  9. Hello World, Thank you Affinity, your product is amazing. I will be sharing this work on LinkedIn mentioning Affinity Products. You can also check it on YouTube as well. Almost forgot, you can also use the slider yourself to draw haha I am still testing it though. give it a shot https://boroji.com/test/index.html Thank you again, Keep up the good work Geometric_Pattern-Timelapse.mp4
  10. Hi, For a project I need to add a <pattern> fill to svg elements. It's no problem generating them by code withJavascript, but it would be a lot faster if there is a way to create these patterns from the Designer-editor. Is there a way to create vector-patterns in Designer that export to a <pattern> element on svg export? Thanks!
  11. I really didn’t know where I was going when I started this piece for fun, but one thing led to another as I got in flow. Very satisfying creative experience. Hope you enjoy!
  12. Hello World, Here is the geometric Pattern Part 2. I will be sharing this work on LinkedIn mentioning Affinity Products. You can also check it on YouTube as well. You can also check the website now https://boroji.com Thank you Affinity for your amazing products Geometric_Pattern-Timelapse-2.mp4
  13. So I am working on this project for class and I am using the iOS app. I am having issues with certain lines showing up when printing. If you look on the first image a grid seems to appear, is there a way to make them all appear flat. Also each section where the grid appears is an individual group(I’m starting to think this is the issue). Should I have added each individual shape using Boolean operations tab?

  15. So I want to make a random triangular pattern in photo but so far I haven't found an efficient way of going it. My target is something similar to the below image but the colours are randomly selected within a range. If possible I would also like the overall colour gradient to get darker down the page. (I know this is more of a designer job but I don't have this software at current and I can't find a way to do it in there either) So far I have found that I can create a triangular grid using induvidual triangle shapes made with the pen tool that I've replicated using a horizontal triangular grid (see below) as a guide. I could colour them manually but this would be far too slow. Thanks for any help!
  16. HI guys, I created a pattern in affinity and I use symbols to do it. I see there is a little white square line on it. Do you know how to remove the square line please . 2- Also after exporting my pattern I see that it came out blurry do you please guys know why?
  17. Hi, I want to make a repeating pattern and saw a Photoshop tutorial ( https://binged.it/2tZ6SDb ) where they used an offset function to do this. I've tried searching for something similar in Affinity Designer but cannot seem to find an equivalent? Is there something I've missed? istring
  18. Hi. I would like to know if there is anything in Affinity designer like the Adobe Illustrators transform effect? (See video below) I am wanting to make complex geometric patterns. I know about power duplicate in affinity but it seems like there is far much more control with the transform tool in Illustrator, plus it saves a lot of time. I have posted an example video below from Adobe Illustrator, this is what I am looking to do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kCwmEfCsPdw&t=328s Can any one point me in the right direction? Or are we limited to power duplicate in Affinity designer/photo? Any ideas/help will be appreciated! Thank you for your time. Dan.
  19. This is just a small thing, but it irritates the hell out of me When I select a shape for example and go to the fill options there's no bitmap fill option only solid or gradient fill options, so if I want bitmap fill, I then have to go to the tools select the fill tool or use the shortcut key and then go back to the context toolbar fill options. Why is it done like that, is there a reason - it just seems counter-intuitive even though its just the smallest of things...
  20. Hi folks, off the back of this tweet - https://twitter.com/maisum_thiago/status/1159216372683087874?s=19 regarding Aseprite and copying a small portion of a design and having it repeat within an object (or lined confines) I was wondering if it would be possible to have a similar effect within Designer? Would be a great way to mass fill objects with a polkadot or any repeating texture/fill, kind of like a quasi-brush. Thanks, Rori
  21. Hello, the vector "pattern brush" of AI is really useful for a lot of decorative work. Today, it seems to me that I can't do such vector designs in Affinity... And the Bitmap Brushes do not really answer to my need, especially regarding the handling of the corners. I've seen some questions on this subject on the forum but no actual answer from the team, can this feature be planned or considered? Thanks a lot!
  22. Here’s another site which I found in my bookmarks that lets you quickly create images that can be used for backgrounds (and probably other things too): http://bg.siteorigin.com/ There are loads of different patterns and various options to play with. I’ve attached two examples: Leather; and White Plaster.
  23. Sorry if it's duplicate post. It would be nice to have a pattern fill feature with a few patterns to start with instead of gradient tool and bitmap fill. Also quickly create patterns by drawing a square on your shapes and save them to swatch library. Or..at least if you save gradient fill with a bitmap image, and reapply that fill on another shape to get the same size of the pattern. See the image, they all get a different size.
  24. Hi all,I really like Affinity Designer but the more features arrive, the more complicated is becomes.. There is a new challenge for me and Affinity Designer for which I would need your help and ideas: Creating a mermaid digital paper as a seamless repeating pattern. I got an at least basic version of the attached one (no glitter, no lightning etc.) but due to the shadows it wasn't seamless on the vertical. If seamless isn't possible due to the different lightning effects of my sample picture attached, how could I achieve anyway the digital paper mermaid look of my sample? Important: It definitely has to be scalable vector, no copied images etc.. Thanks a lot in advance. I'm looking so forward to your help and your ideas! Foxi
  25. Basically what the title says- pattern stamp tool request similar to photoshop, as an extension of the clone stamp tool concept. Texture samples could be applied to the pattern stamp, which can then be used as an overlay brush or something. I would also like for the joint ability to sample from images to create new patterns and textures to turn into brushes.
