Hi MBd  - I know that one, but thanks anyway.  (My last version of Photoshop was CS3 (from 2007, wow!), which finally gave up the ghost something like three or so years ago.  I suspect the Levels trick was old even when CS3 came out.)  I agree, it's a really, really useful trick – and I share your frustration that it's missing from Curves.  :(

    appreciate that :11_blush:

another frustration is that the preview trick of PS in the unsharp mask filter is not available in Affinity Photo (no, difference blend mode does not cut it)

  2. congratulations ! :11_blush:

Hey, 3.5 sec start up time for this beta! Wow, what an improvement, but I guess you've forgotten to include the debug code, right?  ;)

    cheers

  3. when you use the levels adjustment

you press the alt key and get clipping warnings for shadows and highlights

(and you can record levels adjustment as a macro)

here is the corresponding official help file

    https://affinity.help/photo/English.lproj/pages/Adjustments/adjustment_levels.html

not available in curves though sadly https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/22624-curves-and-blend-if-picker-size-visibility/#comment-106288

    cheers

Would be awfully kind of you if anyone could point out where the settings/preferences are saved for the beta versions of Designer/Photo.

    ~/Library/Containers/com.seriflabs.affinitydesigner.beta/Data/Library/Application Support/user

    ~/Library/Containers/com.seriflabs.affinitydesigner.beta/Data/Library/Application Support

in finder hit cmd shift g (Go to Folder) and paste

just delete .beta or rename designer to photo to get the folders for the respective

This is a similar bug to one that's already logged when rotating two or more objects through the transform panel using the panel's anchor points. I believe they have the some cause. To replicate draw two objects, select both, set the anchor point to top left or something else other than center and drag the mouse over the R label in the transform panel.

They will end up out of the canvas. Curiously if you use the Rotation slider first to rotate them a little then drag the mouse over the R label, it all works as expected.

    Ok

    interesting

  6.

    • Added ability to rotate the selected nodes in the Node Tool - via the Transform panel

If you select some nodes and rotate them around a corner/ side (just not around the middle) they "move" outwards

somehow like the rotation center is recalculated all the time?

I'm not sure how this feature is expected to work but at least I did not expect it to work this way, just saying

This is really a lame thread, I've watched this from the sidelines and can't bite my tongue anymore. Here are my 2 cents:

Affinity is not Adobe. Affinity software doesn't need to be or do everything Adobe does, even for "professionals." Last time I checked other professionals in other fields (this applies not only in a software driven profession like design/photo/illustration) I discovered something amazing!! Professionals used MULTIPLE tools to do their job.

    CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?!

Yes that's right!! People use multiple tools to get their jobs done all over the world!! I don't think there's one professional career that requieres the use of only one tool, except smoking crack, and you still need a lighter and pipe, so that's 2 tools. And one tool DOES NOT exist which does everything for everyone. I don't see any carpenters crying that their hammer can't cut a 2x4!! You know what they do in, they use the tool that works!

    CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT?!

And they don't expect a $50 saw to do what a $10,000 laser cuter does...

So please: stop wasting everyone's time with these useless cry-baby posts. You don't like what Affinity offers? It's not "professional" enough?! Good, that's your prerogative. You're free to go back to Adobe and pay the "professional" subscription price since you're such a "professional." The Devs will release the features in the order THEY SEE FIT, if you don't like it, GO BACK TO ADOBE AND PAY YOUR PROFESSIONAL SUBSCRIPTION!!

Do people go to homebuilders and tell them they want the roof built before the foundation?!!

Go finish your work instead of crying about a BRAND NEW TOOL THAT'S IN ITS INFANCY YET SHOWS VASTLY IMPROVED PERFORMANCE AND MORE POTENTIAL than Adobe.

Seems to me that simple impatience is all that's driving these kinds of posts. The Devs have been so kind to even engage the user community directly and not be filtered through customer service as is the norm. If you can't wait for a fruit to ripen, it will never yield its delicious taste. Like the ancient Chinese used to say, "Suck it up, buttercup."

    ok rant mode off

    quite some truth

I'd like to add that this discussion is not only about Affinity Apps being professional or not

    -

but claiming features which are not yet there (marketing) and announcing features ("soon") which do not appear which now leads to the fact that you "only see the news when they are presented on apple WWDC"

and lets not forget that Affinity gets quite a bit out of these forums as well, it is not like the users are not reporting bugs/& enhancing features/ ideas / give free support

forums are a give and take and I do not think one side greatly exceeds the other here

To be very clear, some of our functions are not as good as they’re going to be - but the software can legitimately make the claim ‘most precise’ as we use double precision coordinates for data and can zoom thousands of times greater than other software - this in itself backs up the claim. The vast majority of the software works correctly, manipulating and maintaining this precise data which is not found in other applications, you are just picking fault with something we’ve already publicly acknowledged is not working as we’d like and will change.

are you sure no one else is using fractions instead of doubles? (how precise are your snapping guides placed at 1/3 of the page?)

    (no, I'm not 100% serious :))

    Status: Beta Release

    Purpose: New features, fixes, improvements

    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Photo

    Mac App Store: Not Submitted

    Download: 1.5 Beta 1 Here

This is an early beta of a substantial change to our codebase and as much as we have tried to ensure the quality of the code, it should be considered to be not suitable for production use. This means that you should not attempt to use it for commercial purposes or for any other activity that you may be adversely affected by the application failing. In addition it is definitely worth noting that files created in Affinity 1.5 cannot be opened in 1.4 so always make a copy of your important documents before opening them in 1.5 to ensure you do not accidentally overwrite them and are unable to open them in your 1.4 version.

To use this beta, simply download the file from the link given above and double-click on the file to open the installer. Follow the instructions to install the beta version. The beta sits alongside the Mac App Store version and will not interfere with it.

With all that said, here is a list of all the new things we can do with 1.5. This will be a fairly short beta (approx. 6 weeks) and things will likely be bad / broken for the the first week or two. After that, we expect the beta to become more stable and usable.

Please understand that all betas must start somewhere - and that they are beta for a reason!

Thanks once again for taking the time to download and use our beta :) - here's the list:

    Layer Linking [NOT IMPLEMENTED YET]

Layer linking will happen in 1.5 - at the moment it is currently not exposed in this beta. Look out for it soon though - it should set the benchmark for how linked layers should work in a raster editor.. More on this soon!

Thanks again for taking the time to use this beta!

are linked layers deprecated? (they are apparently not on the roadmap anymore)

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/45227-promised-and-forgotten/#comment-227449

    hope I'm missing something... ?!

  10. yeah I'll adjust accordingly once scripting is available and make the tests cover much more

Hopefully they will add scripting in Haskell, otherwise you just can not make sure there are no side effects harming your measurement:D

it is not on the 1.x roadmap though afaik

    haskell_2x.png

where is linked layer btw? disappeared from the roadmap like magic...:42_confused:

    @MattP

"Surprisingly, the macro took much longer to run on the beta than it did on whichever retail version I was using back in January when I reported my results in that topic (well over 16 minutes vs. around 9.5 minutes)."

We're obviously trying our best to give you a seamless experience and the best results on both operating systems... but I'll say that we develop 'Mac first' with all future updates and the products were initially developed and designed for Mac. Also, the next update (1.6) will come with a very fast new document view that makes use of Metal on macOS so it's even faster than before... If I had to decide one way or the other, I'd personally go with Mac (but then, I've not touched a Windows machine in about 7 years, so....)

I do not think this statement is worth the rant after that and does not do the windows team justice

at the moment their beta may face some stability issues and windows has a much broader set of configurations which leads to more possible errors but I've had Affinity Photo Trial running on a CoreQuad and had about the same speed as a DualCore 2017 MacBook,

also a Ryzen Octacore is at the moment probably the fastest configuration which also comes with a very reasonable price tag and trumps every more expensive Mac

    https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/32907-affinity-photo-performance-comparison-data-sheet/?p=159980

here is some data to put performance into perspective

I do not personally use windows either but this is not because of performance

Affinity will be faster on a equally expensive windows config

the lack of optimization is more than rectified by other parts available on the market (I would not even say that the optimization is worse, it has just a much more wide spread than on mac)

the iPad version has the best performance by a huge margin (compared to processing power/ GHz/ Cores) which is actually faster than an 4GHz i7 Quadcore iMac)
