Publisher: Default typographic setting

The rules of typography vary according to the country and the standard used.

They teach:

• precise widths of spaces for punctuation: ! ? ; : «» = - – —;
• special character sizes for the exponents, indices, superscript, subscript…

For example, how to indicate that the exclamation point must always be preceded by a quarter of quadratin space?

Where can we set this?

I don't think this is possible in Publisher however I'm not sure if I've understood exactly what you are looking for. Which app is it you are using in your screenshots?

This is, of course, as Mikew recognized, Quarkxpress ! By the way, it's written on the first image.

These settings can also be made in Indesign, and in other desktop publishing software less useful to cite here.

Uh! How to say? DTP software that does not know how to propose a dictionary of the default setting of spaces, it would be a little like a calculator which would not be able to do the four operations. Each country uses its own typographic rules and a good DTP operator knows how to switch from one to another depending on the origin of his clients.

In French, for example, the space after the dialogue dash is adjusted differently according to the book publishers.
