Russ Johnson
I'd like to see tools that leverage geometric measurements to make shape making easy. Specifically: Path tangent to 1 curve Ditto 2 curves Arc tangent to 1 curve Ditto 2 curves Ditto 3 curves Circle tangent to 1 curve Ditto 2 curves Ditto 3 curves Path perpendicular to 1 path Ditto 2 paths Path along shortest distance between paths Arc by three points Arc by start-end-direction Circle by three points Circle by two points and direction Shape exactly inscribed in another shape Quote —Russ Jonson Still and video design, logos, branding, and more RussDoes.com
Staff Ben Posted May 20, 2015 Staff Share Posted May 20, 2015 Some of these will be looked at when we have time. Might need some examples of what you mean for some of these cases. Staff MattP Posted May 22, 2015 Staff Share Posted May 22, 2015 Hi Russ, Just thought I'd reply to let you know that Ben's out of the office until Tuesday, so don't think he's not responding in the meantime! Thanks, Matt Russ Johnson
Staff Ben Posted May 26, 2015 Staff Share Posted May 26, 2015 I'm back. Not only out of the office, but had no internet access all weekend too. Could you give diagrams of the following, just so I am clear on each. Then I can see what stuff might be achievable through snapping, and what requires new object types. Thanks. Path tangent to 1 curve Ditto 2 curves Arc tangent to 1 curve Ditto 2 curves Ditto 3 curves Circle tangent to 1 curve Ditto 2 curves Ditto 3 curves Path perpendicular to 1 path Ditto 2 paths Path along shortest distance between paths Shape exactly inscribed in another shape Quote SerifLabs team - Affinity Developer Software engineer - Photographer - Guitarist - Philosopher iMac 27" Retina 5K (Late 2015), 4.0GHz i7, AMD Radeon R9 M395 MacBook (Early 2015), 1.3GHz Core M, Intel HD 5300 iPad Pro 10.5", 256GB
rui_mac
Another example if things that could be added through scripting ;)
Russ Johnson
Sorry it took a while to get these posted. But here are examples of what I’m talking about. Some of these aren’t super obvious, but where curves touch in these examples, they touch at one point and only one point exactly. I threw in a couple extra I thought of as I was doing these, too, including something that will make long shadow aficionados like me swoon. HTH! —Russ joost 1 Quote —Russ Jonson Still and video design, logos, branding, and more RussDoes.com

joost
Wow I totally like Russ' suggestions/examples. +1 for me. Russ Johnson
Staff Ben Posted May 29, 2015 Staff Share Posted May 29, 2015 I can see some of these examples being achieved through snapping. In fact, we already have some back end support for finding a tangent and perpendicular at a point on a curve, and using it in construction snapping, but it needs refinement before we make it public. So, anything that works on a tangent or perpendicular from one curve should be possible. The other examples are quite involved. We may look at them the future. Mr. Doodlezz
Oh yes pretty pretty please, I miss these features a lot. I worked with them in Illustrator almost everyday via the Astute Graphics plugin »SubScribe«. To be honest almost all there plugins were really great during the trial period – but after that they come with a price tag. I'd really love to see especially something like the »line tangent to two paths« and »line perpendicular to two paths« option – these would help a lot. The ColliderScribe plugin is also preeetty nice … sorry for raving so much about it, but their plugins or – more specifically the function they provide – really are that awesome. :,D
JimGoshorn
I have Astute Graphics plug-ins as well and they make Illustrator much easier to work with. One of the impressive things about Designer is that they have included some of the VectorScribe features natively.

One of the impressive things about Designer is that they have included some of the VectorScribe features natively. Yeah, you're totally right – I forgot to mention it, thanks for pointing out! The »white arrow« indeed already has a very VectorScribe like feeling. I probably got used to it, I didn't even notice. Edit: Of course the shapes and the corner tool! Oh my … yes, the corner tool made my decision to purchase Designer in the first place, haha. Russ Johnson
JimGoshorn
What would be really great would be if Serif and Astute Graphics could get together and come up with plug-ins for Designer. I have to admit that I'm still on the fence though between Illustrator and Designer... Russ Johnson
Mr. Doodlezz
That'd be ideal … I'm still fiddling around and figuring stuff. Right know I'm all about – yes I'm a bit late in the game, don't hit me please – long shadow icons and stuff. Really could use that tangent/perpendicular feature therefore, especially for non-geometrical rounded shapes. But yeah, it'd be nice in generell, not only for that purpose. JimGoshorn
Compared to many here, I am still a newbie since I have been working with Illustrator for only about a year. Photoshop on the other hand has been my tool of choice for about 12 years since version 6.
