Staff MattP Posted April 14, 2015 Staff Share Posted April 14, 2015 I really like the textures you've got going on here - Santa's outfit and Rudolf's fur are wonderful! A really nice scene - and a nice background too :)
Staff MEB Posted April 14, 2015 Staff Share Posted April 14, 2015 I agree with Matt about the textures. Nice work there. I know this will sound silly but i also like how you rendered the legs/paws(?) connection (with some kinda of geometric volumetry look). Santa's outfit looks super too! Looking forward for the third! specworkfan
It's very good. I would suggest only making Rudolf (15 more years until that name is in the public domain), and Santa happier. It reminds me of American Gothic, so if that is what you are going for then please ignore.Santa is jolly, drunk, and probably a paedophile. Express him as such. :-)
denironaut
Thanks for the reply specworkfan, to be honest I never considered any copyright issues, I'm not entirely sure how it works but perhaps not using the name Rudolph anywhere would suffice? Surely its pretty much Christmas folklore by now? Quote http://earnshaw.photography

specworkfan
The nose doesn't light up, and the reindeer is public domain, so this is probably ok as an image. That's not for sure though, and even a lawyer might not be able to tell you accurately when things are borderline. You wouldn't be able to say that it is Santa and Rudolph for sure. There are some fair uses, but this work, especially for greeting cards wouldn't meet any of them. The trademark owners seem especially vicious in protecting it, so I would just be careful. http://tmsearch.uspto.gov/bin/showfield?f=doc&state=4802:rtatj7.6.9http://articles.mcall.com/2003-12-23/features/3500094_1_ale-brew-pub-trademark-owner Thanks for the reply specworkfan, to be honest I never considered any copyright issues, I'm not entirely sure how it works but perhaps not using the name Rudolph anywhere would suffice? denironaut
My word, finding out Santa doesn't exist was bad enough, this is too much! Obviously I need to research and speak to any possible future publishers regarding copyright issues. Thankfully there's still plenty of content I could create, snowmen, robins, turkeys..... specworkfan
It's an interesting question about the red nose. I think it might be protected by trademark in the way you drew it. Any legal questions like these will scare any commercial enterprises. I quite like the pose of this work, and now that I think about it, I might do something similar for Christmas after spending an hour looking at gothic parodies. Most of the decisions of Christmas stuff gets made in March and April, so I guess that would be for next Christmas. It's never too early for Christmas! eejits
Looks great! Like MattP said, the textures are ace, really adds to the image. The only thing I might change is the shape of Santa's hand on Rudolph's back. Kinda looks like a fist, just plonked there, rather than an open hand gently resting on his back. It's a minor thing. Great work though, hopefully you'll sell loads of these cards (you are selling them, right?) denironaut
Thanks George! I agree the hand needs work, its funny you should mention it, I've spent the last two days trying to draw hands and feet, I think its an area I need to improve a lot! I would hope that maybe one day a publisher might be interested in my work but for now its just a side project to improve my skills. I might just create one or two Christmas designs a month amongst other things. Just ordered two a4 isometric grid drawing pads...I dont know why this excites me so much! Thanks.
