Hi..
I would like to know how i can make a Headline 1   or also a Headline 2 automaticaly get numbered  when i put in a new Charpter Headline..  for example..

Charpter  1

   Subcharpter 1.1

   Subcharpter 1.2

Charpter 2 ...

i got no idea how to do this.

Hi @Tom Schülke,

look under Text Styles > Paragraph > Bullets and Numbering.

In the field 'Text' you can type in text and numbering fields. E.g. according your example above you would type in there 'Chapter \#\t'. This translates into 'Chapter' plus a SPACE plus the current numbering level's number plus a TAB.

I hope this helps.

Hi,
sorry to ask again. Under Textstyle i cant find a category > paragraph > Bullets and Numbering..

Ok i find it under the tab.    Paragraph.. here i tried to  put in the \1."  and "\#".

This does what i expected..  the Heading gets a Number 1. followed by the text..

But when i apply this to the textstyle "Heading 2",  and update this textstyle with it, all my Headings get the same number..  the number 1.  So what am i missing here..  also what would   i  have to do to number   for exmple a   Heading     1.1   1.2  1.3..

is ther out any tutorial about this ?  When you didnt ever work with indesign on a professional level, this still is very confusing..  sorry.  ill put two screenshots.

This is because the Restart numbering rule is set to Any Non List. Set it to Below Current Level instead.

Set the list level. It should be 1 for the chapters that are numbered 1, 2, 3, and 2 for the subchapters that are numbered 1.1, 1.2, 2.1, 2.2 etc. Then in the list text, \1 will become the chapter number, and \2 will become the subchapter  number. Look at text styles Numbered 1, Numbered 2 for an example.

Thank you Dave Harris

This worked out for the Text itself..  I made the secound heading a child of the first Heading.

Now.. How can i make the TOC reflect the subheading.. and.  how can i make the TOC also bring in the Numbering of my Headings ?
