Selecting items

I'm not too crazy about having to drag the selection arrow around the entire items to select them. There should be a choice of methods.

There is. Try Preferences > Tools > Select object when intersects with selection marquee.

Also you can drag with left + right mouse buttons to enable this type of selection. Best of both worlds.

On Macs, holding down the control & option keys before starting to drag out the selection marquee temporarily reverses the behavior set in the preference. Both keys must be pressed before clicking & dragging; if just the control key is pressed, that opens the popup context menu when you click.

This works the same way on all three Mac desktop apps.
