ygoe Posted December 3, 2017 Posted December 3, 2017 I'm assigned the task to redraw an old logo that was created when there were no computers. There's things aligned around a circle. My challenge is to draw these things and my question is how to place them around the circle. I have attached a screenshot of my work so far. And no, I'm far from an artistic designer. On the left side there's an older converted scan in light colours, and my drawing on top of it in darker colours. The things around the circle are still missing. On the right side (small) is my very first effort in creating the leaves structures for the upper half. I now need to transform it so that it goes around the circle. See, I don't even know any words for these operations. I know there's something like putting text on a path, only I don't have text but instead some other straight drawing that needs to bend around. This is the first drawing, it will be placed two times in the circle. The text isn't type but custom drawing. It's hand-drawn from some template I was told, and I couldn't find a similar font, so I'll probably have to draw it myself. When I've managed to do that, it will also be put around the circle. Any ideas? I'm using Affinity Designer 1.6 for Windows. Quote
Guest Posted December 3, 2017 Posted December 3, 2017 Good evening, ygoe, You can create a brush with the pattern and then apply it to the circle. Quote
gdenby Posted December 3, 2017 Posted December 3, 2017 Ask if the old lettering has to be exact. If not, show it in a similar font. Its not like this is a trademark image, or is it? Accurately re-creating 13 characters from a scan would probably take way too much time, even if Affinity had a bit map trace feature. That kind of work w. any software typically requires lots of cleaning up. Most of the old plastic stencils seem to have disappeared, and Letraset rub on character sheets are now collectors items. So starting from the original is very unlikely. In other words, either someone will have to pay for some fairly hard work on your part, or be satisfied w. something close enough. ygoe Posted December 4, 2017 Author Posted December 4, 2017 How can I convert my drawing into a brush? It only offers unsuitable options and then accepts pixel image files. The whole thing must remain a vector image because it may be used at very large sizes. Quote
Guest Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Hello ygoe, The created brush will not be vectorial but if it is created in small size with a good resolution (300 dpi), there will be no problems with magnification. The reverse would be problematic. To create the brush you draw your sheets and export them in png by choosing the option "Selection without background". Then in the "Brushes" tab of the studio you click on the "Hamburger" at the top right and choose "New textured image brush". Then choose the file that is added as a brush. Double-click on the brush and choose repeat in Body. You can then apply this brush to a line or shape. If the brush is created in color, for this color to appear once the brush is applied, the line and filling must be placed on transparent in the "Colour" tab of the studio. Quote
ygoe Posted December 4, 2017 Author Posted December 4, 2017 The image will also be printed on a large flag with a diameter of over a metre or so. I don't think pixel images qualify for that well. I've already got a vectorised version of a smaller scan of some 20 cm (created by another application, might have been Ai) but it looks more ugly in large, so I should redraw it properly this time. Is there any vector handling for my requirement? Quote

R C-R Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 I don't know how viable this would be but you might consider creating a single leaf segment composed of one or more vectors, tweaking its nodes slightly to give it a bit of a bend, & power duplicating it with a suitable rotation center to create a seamless overlap. As a sort of proof of concept exercise, I tried doing that using symbols for the segments. I was working off a blown up version of your scanned image, so it is very crude & the spacing is poor but hopefully if you have a higher resolution scan to work from you could get better results. I did not try to include the berries (or whatever the dots are supposed to be) or the loop segment at the end, but maybe take a look at geometry dup & rotate.afdesign to get the general idea. Guest Posted December 4, 2017 Posted December 4, 2017 Drawing with a pen except for the text which is made with a font, I put frank colors. Quote
