With other applications I can draw a picture from a window outside and directly into the document. This method is most easy, when I want to select and place a lot of pictures in a document one by one.  But when I do that with Affinity Publisher, there will be created a new window where the picture will show up. And I can not at the same time have this window and my document open. What am I supposed to do?

Searching "Plasce" in the Help menu I can read:

"multiple items can be loaded onto the Place panel and then placed, one at a time, in their top-to-bottom order from the panel or in any order you choose."

But nothing is told about have to get to "the Place panel". And what about placicng one item at a time?

It would help if you said which app and OS you're using, but generally, after you've created a document, you can open the folder with your  files and just drag and drop them onto the document. If you drop them on the title bar area the picture will open in a new window.

To Place images, go to File - Place, a folder will open, navigate to where your pictures are, choose one or more, then click on Open. The Place Panel will open, you can then select each one and click/drag to place in your document.

MacBook Air 2020. OS 15.1.1 – Publ. 2.5.7. The attached files shows: Moving the picture from outside into a Word document, where it just is placed. And the the same into a Publ. document where the picture gets its own window (named after the Picture) seperated from the documents own window. – I know how to use the Place command.  But then I can not always see how the picture looks when I choose. Maybe I would preferre anither one. – Why not use a metod which I can easy use with other applications?

It works in Windows, so I have no idea why it doesn't for you on a Mac!

Maybe, if you want to be able to change the picture easily, if you change your mind, you'd be better off using Picture Frames.

Sometimes it also works for me on the Mac. But I can never be sure.

But it must never the less be a known feature and not an accident with Publisher that a picture drawn from outside can form its own window. What is the meaning of that?

And back to my other question: How do I get to the Place panel? In which menu can I choose it?

File > Place.

I am not entirely sure of what it is you are doing with the "picture drawn from outside", I assume that you are performing what is commonly called "drag and drop". A rule of thumb: If you do the drop on a Page in Publisher the picture should be placed on that page. If you drop the picture elsewhere then the picture will be opened as a new file.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.6.0 | Affinity Photo 2.6.0 | Affinity Publisher 2.6.0 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

The Place panel in Publisher will auto fill with whatever images you select after invoking the Place command. Menubar: File > Place.
(In the recording I have the Place command set as a shortcut on my Wacom tablet)
Click once on an image thumbnail in the Place window to select it then draw out the size you want it on the page. (See first half of recording).
If you select multiple images and then draw them out you will get one image per page. (See second half of recording).

I told you in a previous post and you replied "I know how to use the Place command."!

You can't "choose" the Panel from a menu, you get it by using the "Place Command" (File Menu - Place or by using the Place Tool), then selecting the images you want and clicking on "Open".

You can also drag one or more files from Finder (macOS) or File Explorer (Windows) and as long as you drop them in the correct place (e.g., on a document page in Publisher) you'll get the Place panel if:

  • you had multiple files selected when you drag; or
  • you press the Opt key (macOS) or the Alt key (Windows), which allows you to get the Place panel even when dragging a single file.

It's briefly mentioned in the Help for Placing Content in Publisher 2: https://affinity.help/publisher2/English.lproj/pages/Media/placeImages.html (in a note box toward the bottom of the page)

If I use the “Place Command” and select one image, I can immediately place the image in the document by clicking in the page.

If I use the “Place Command” and select more than one image, the Place panel will show up in the Publisher window. From there I can select the images one by one and place them in the document.

About drag and drop:

I can see now, that if I drop in the Publisher window I must click inside the document area. If not the image will show up in another window as I described before with examples. I do not know what to do with that window.

All the same will happen, when I drag and drop more than one image.

But now I know to use the Opt key.

Thank you, Walt, for helping with making this proces clear.
