Affinity Designer 2.5.3 crashing continually

Recommended Posts

I decided to finally give up on Serif Draw as it does not work well on my current laptop with resolution of the screen and Windows 11. I have had all the Affinity products for years so I have tried to use Designer to re-draw my colour wiring diagram for my Land Rover Series 2. After just under three hours of labour and seven program crashes I have given up. It has got to a stage now where I copy and past a line, colour it then add a dashed line modification and it crashes every time. I have nothing to show as the program just vanishes just after the line is modified.

Please bring back a decent drawing program like Serif Draw this crashed occasionally but not like this and you could distribute objects evenly I can't see how this is done with Designer.

Is there some serious bug in this software for it to crash so often?

Ian

Hello @IanRS and welcome to the forums.

Have you tried with deactivated hardware acceleration? Are the graphics driver up-to-date?

I will try the acceleration bit, all drivers up to date being a CISO I am a bit careful about patches and updates.

At least the crash can be replicated as it now fails every time when I change the dashed line setting in this drawing.

It might help if you'd share a .afdesign file with us, and tell us which line is giving you troubles.

Also a screenshot of the Stroke setting you're trying to use.

Thanks. I have no trouble changing that dashed line to 3, 3.

Are you getting crash reports?

Or there might be relevant entries in the Windows Event Log:

Or, perhaps the error is coming from a download GPU driver, so you might try updating it/them:

No GPU updates available it is Intel graphics so not really extraordinary. I did a bios update to be on the safe side but still crashes as soon as put that second 3 in the box and click away from the modification box. I tried another line and that also files on modifying the dash values. If it is any help here are my laptop specs.

Device is a Lenovo Yogo Slim 7i Pro X

I can repeat the crash every time

Recipe:

1. Enter 3 in first box and hit Tab key
2. Enter 3 in second box do not hit Tab key
3. Click outside canvas

Note: Only seems to crash if I change the stroke settings via the context toolbar. Could not get it to crash using the Stroke Panel

Note2: If I copy all layers to a new document, I can't repeat the crash but I cannot vouch that the new document does not have other future problems. You would need to test it if you go with this option

Thanks for the tip Carl, I am using Stroke Panel now and all good so I will use that in future.

You should not need to

Did you copy the Layers to a new document?

If not, the document you are still working on is still somehow corrupt

OK, support will have to have a look at the document

I'd carry on with caution

@IanRS So far I haven't been able to replicate the crash using your file in Designer on macOS or Windows. Selecting that curve (or any) and then adjusting the dashes on the Context toolbar, using TAB/not using TAB. None of the workflows results in a crash on different machines.

I'll continue to do some testing to see if I can get it to crash but for the moment I'd continue to use the workaround @carl123 suggested.
