Hi @Sean P,

No problem... following up as requested in a new thread...

Quote

Naming Conventions

  • The Text Style Editor panel uses 'Title Case' for each 'Panel name heading' but 'Sentence case' for 'Style' and 'Subcategory' names in each section. The Studio panels use 'Title Case' throughout...

@Sean P I'm not entirely sure which bits you're referring to here - do you mind throwing some screenshots up please?

Text Style Editor Left | Character Panel Right

Taking Character as one example:

  • We have Positioning & Transform (&) in the TSE, Position and Transform (and) in the Character panel.
  • The subcategories in the TSE use Sentance case, the tooltips in the Character panel use Title Case

CharacterPanels.png.349ef56159249274a80c472a7648730e.png

or Language as another:

  • The TSE has been updated to include 'Language' after the first two options, the Language panel hasn't
  • We have Typography Script (Title Case) in the TSE, Typography script (Sentence case) in the Language Panel

Text Style Editor Panel Tab Name | Studio Panel Tab Name

  • Colour & Decorations | Decorations
  • Position & Transform | Position and Transform
  • Bullets & Numbering | Bullets and Numbering
  • Flow | Flow Options

@Sean P Colour & Decorations name I believe is because it covers both text colours and the options found in decorations - essentially two sections of the Character Panel merged into one section of the TSE. However, I have logged it with the other options to query.

This relates to these two panels where in the Character Panel you can set Text, Highlight, Underline, Strikethrough and Outline colours...

Variants

  • The minus button to remove 'Stylistic' sets suffers from a delay unlike the plus button to add them..

@Sean P This is a weird Monterey issue - I can only reproduce on that, however dragging the TSE will cause it to update and show up.

I'm not sure I follow, there is nothing you can drag in the TSE, only a Plus and Minus button...

Optical Alignment

  • Selecting 'Type: Font' shows all options greyed out so it is only possible to edit values when 'Type: Manual' is selected

@Sean P This is intentional - it uses the font's optical alignment values, and so ignores the table.

This differs from the behaviour in v2.4.2 which is why I mentioned it.

  • After clicking 'Add' in 2.4.2 the Optical Alignment options are editable when the dropdown is set to [No Change], Manual and Font.
  • After clicking 'Add' in 2.5.0 the Optical Alignment options are editable only when the dropdown is set to Manual.

Does that mean the 2.4.2 behaviour is incorrect?

Initial Words

  • The Rest end characters' ⨂ button is greyed out when 'Enabled' is checked and only a single 'end character' appears in the text entry field
  • The Rest end characters' ⨂ button doesn't remove 'end characters' from the text entry field

Decorations

  • With Enabled checked' Decoration 1 is initially greyed out until Decoration 2 is added
  • Using the 'Minus' button it is possible to remove all decorations leaving the 'Plus' disabled which means the 'Enable' checkbox has to be clicked three times to re-enable the 'Plus' button and allow Decorations to be added.

@Sean P I think most of these should be fixed in the upcoming build. The only one that probably isn't is the Using Minus Button not allowing you to Add one, which I did notice when checking fixes for the other issues.

Hopefully, that one can be added to the list for a future update...

General Alignment issues...

@Sean P I'll run these past development first to see what can be done.

A simple grid layout should be sufficient for consistent alignment. Happy to create one if it helps... :)

I hope the above helps to clarify a few points but let me know if not... :)

Thanks! I'm querying which is correct with development then will create issues relating to it. I have already created a separate issue for the Language section as that was raised in a different part of your previous query.

As I said it combines the colour section from start of the Character Panel and the Decorations subsection.

By this I meant just dragging the whole dialog around via the title bar :)

Of course thats not a problem! It was deemed that 2.4.2 was incorrect, and the Paragraph Panel is still incorrect as MikeTO has mentioned below which I'll log and link to that thread.

Hi @Sean P,

Apologies, for some reason I thought you were referring to Decorations, as in the section at the bottom of the TSE...

In which case there is still a small discrepancy in as much as the TSE labels the first two items as 'Text Fill' and 'Highlight Fill', the Character Panel labels them as 'Font Colour' and 'Background Colour'.

Hi @Sean P,

The issue seems specific to the first three default 'Stylistic Sets' in the panel though it affects a fourth if added as well...

If you click and hold the Minus button for three seconds it will happily delete the first three items correctly, though I guess that is just accounting for the natural delay seen.

If you add additional 'Stylistic Sets' using the add button so you have for example twelve in the list, clicking the Minus button normally will correctly delete 'Stylistic Set 12' through to 'Stylistic Set 05' but you get the delay on 'Stylistic Set 04' to 'Stylistic Set 01'.

In Light Mode, you see a dark grey horizontal line added beneath the preceding 'Stylistic Set' when the Minus button is clicked normally which I assume is just the panel background showing through...

Would this still be considered a bug and logged to be fixed bearing in mind it is Monterey specific so perhaps a slight outlier?

Yeah I think the grey bar is just the panel not being redrawn correctly after the item is removed. I think its very much all one and the same bug! Once that has been fixed, it should all be ok. :)

General Alignment issues...

@Sean P I'll run these past development first to see what can be done.

Just a quick rough and ready first draft proposal to show how the TSE panel layout could be improved though there is still room for further improvement...

Proposed Improvements

  1. Use a six-column grid to align elements
  2. Use consistent line spacing across all sections, currently, this is lacking
  3. Left-align the 'Panel Title' with the 'Style settings' text and make 'Style settings' a title by removing the colon and making the 's' of settings uppercase
  4. Right-align all the field labels to the grid using the colon that appears after each label
  5. Reduce the height of the 'Underline', 'Strikethrough' and 'Outline' dropdown menus in the 'Colour & Decorations' section from 44 px to 38 px to match the height of the dropdown menus in all other sections
  6. Adjust the width of the dropdown menus and text entry fields to multiples of the grid layout
  7. Left align the [No Change] text across all fields so all dropdown menu and text entry field text vertically aligns
  8. Vertically centre checkboxes and radio buttons with their associated text label
  9. Adust the height of all the spin controllers by 1 px to match the height of their associated dropdown menus
  10. Reduce the width of the 'Cancel' and 'OK' buttons by 9 px each so they match the column grid width and align with the grid

Section Elements Aligned to a Six-Column Grid - Current Layout Left | Proposed Layout Right

Section Elements Using Consistent Line Spacing - Current Layout Left | Proposed Layout Right

Section Elements With Column and Grid Lines Hidden - Current Layout Left | Proposed Layout Right

That’s a fair point but hopefully a consistent layout can be adopted across the panels to take into account for all language variations…

there are other factors that need to be considered such as spacing for localisation.

One of the reasons variable fonts are being adopted for interfaces - the width axis is used to fit varying localized word lenghts into the same field width.

Apple System Font variable, Microsoft Segoe UI Variable, Android Roboto Flex variable, etc. And the optical size is automatically adjusted.
