NiTOXide
Hi all, Just want to confirm, is the maximum number of column guides is 48 (vertical or horizontal)? I could use a bit more for a project I am working on but will make-do with 48 if necessary. Thank you.
GarryP
I’m pretty sure that 48 is the maximum. If you need more than 48 column guides I would suggest using the grid instead, or maybe creating layers that can be snapped to. (You might need to do some manual mathematics to get the numbers right but that shouldn’t be too difficult.) Just out of curiosity, why do you need more than 48 column guides? MikeTO
I believe the maximum number of column guides was increased to 105 at some point. I tested it a year ago and it wouldn't let me add more than 105. GarryP
On Windows, in Publisher (or Designer or Photo) 2.4.0, I can only set a maximum of 48 for the number of Column Guides or Row Guides.
Old Bruce
Have you set a gutter size that is greater than 0 (zero)? Here on Mac I got up to 220 then gave up. GarryP
See attached video. The Gutter size doesn’t seem to matter, nor does the Style (checked just in case). Using the Mouse Scroll Wheel to try and make the value go beyond 48 (not shown in the video) doesn't work either. 2024-03-18 14-30-33.mp4
thomaso
Was there an "improvement" in V2? – In V1 the limit appears to depend on the page/spread size but is definitely higher than the resulting grid useful. For instance on a spread of 2x A3 landscape: Quote macOS 10.14.6 | MacBookPro Retina 15" | Eizo 27" | Affinity V1
GarryP
I’ve just checked with an A3 page size and the maximums of 48 still apply, as they also do with a page size of 2000×2000mm.

In my understanding of the use of Column Guides a limit around 48 wouldn't harm, regardless of page size (assuming that larger page dimensions use larger object sizes). As you mentioned, for more the Grid option may be more useful than Column Guides. In my examples of 700 or 1500 the rendering speed was massively reduced even for just panning the page (while no object was created). R C-R
FWIW, in APub V2.4.0 on my Mac, I created this Lots o' column guides.afpub 3300x3300 px document & had no problems setting large numbers of column & row guides, As attached I used 120 for both, but using the scroll wheel method I could easily set them to 500 or more & everything updated in realtime. MikeTO
My mistake, I know you wrote column guides and I even wrote that in my response but I was thinking about regular guides. For column guides, the popup sliders on macOS max out at 32 guides for me but I can enter any value into the text field. For example, I entered 1234567890 which worked fine and a saved document re-opened with this many guides, although the guides were too dense to see. Few text fields in Affinity have any limits applied to them. Does it work differently on Windows? For regular horizontal and vertical guides, I found a maximum of 105 when I tested it last year. That was a bit more tedious to test. NiTOXide
Hi all, Thanks for the replies. I should have clarified that I am using the Windows version of Affinity Publisher 2.4.0. Seems like there's a bunch of different strokes for different folks. I'll stick with 48 until there's some future clarification or update. Until then, I'll use grids for anything more grandiose. - Jason
