Struggling to set language to UK English

Recommended Posts

I've looked at other threads for help, but none help.

I'm inside Publisher v2 on Mac and it is insisting on spell-checking in US English.

My system default is English UK and specifying it to either default or English does not help.

Please help.

Just a little note - it's always better for forum users if you post the file/screenshot directly to the forum thread. It does not require clicking on some unknown links and services, which many users (including me) reject as a matter of principle.

FWIW, I believe new-to-the forum users initially cannot post attachments as an anti-spam precaution. Since the OP joined just a few hours ago it may not be possible for him or her to add screenshots yet.

Your screen recording showed a ChapGPT session and not Affinity Publisher so you may wish to delete the link from your post. You can edit your post by clicking the ellipsis (...) in its upper-right corner.

If your Mac is set to UK English and Publisher's language is set in Settings to "Default" or "English" then your text should default to UK English. If it's defaulting to US English when you create a new document then you'll need to reset your defaults. Here's the foolproof way to do it.

  1. Create a temporary new document; its settings are unimportant because it will be deleted when you’re done.
  2. To change the defaults for text frames, choose the Frame Text or Table tool. Change "Character > Language > Spelling" to "English (United Kingdom)".
  3. To change the defaults for text objects, choose any other tool such as the Artistic Text or Move tool. "Character > Language > Spelling" will look like it's set to "English (United Kingdom)" but it's really not so click it and select it again. You really do have to do this.
  4. Choose Edit > Defaults > Save to save the changes you have made.

Hey all,

Thanks for the fast replies.

The loom video was there to show all the different ways I was trying to solve it, especially because trying to take a screenshot was forcing the most the language selectors to disappear.

@MikeTO I've followed your instructions and new Frame Text in new files appears to be UK English by default.

But in the current file, if I try to change the language of a frame, it appears to change. But when I click back on to the frame (after changing the frame language), the language jumps back to being English (not UK English).

Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

You can revert a frame to defaults by selecting the frame and choosing Edit > Defaults > Revert but I don't recommend that as it will change a lot more than just language. The best option is to select all the text in the frame and set the language in the Character panel.

Or better yet, always use text styles and define the language in the text style.

Cheers,

Mike

As for text styles, I am using text styles, but I cannot figure out how to update the style to reflect a change of language.

  1. Edit the style (double-click the style name in the panel or click its menu icon and choose Edit "style name".
  2. Click Language in the left column.
  3. Change Spelling in the right column to English (United Kingdom).

You can do this for each style but if you're using styles with a Base group style (as the styles are in the default set), you should consider doing this for "Base" because that change will be inherited by all of the other styles.
