Unsupported languages (Publisher 2.0)

Recommended Posts

I have installed Latin as a language in my Windows 11 system.  (I am referring to the actual language from ancient Rome, not the script used now to write many languages.)  When I use Word or OpenOffice Writer, I can mark text that is in Latin as such.  There is no spell check or grammar check available, which is OK.  Marking text in Latin avoids having a red squiggly line under each word and clearly differentiates text in Latin from text in English, French, etc.

Publisher 2.0 apparently does not follow the Windows system settings in regard to language.  It seems that the only choices for language are the few that come pre-installed with Affinity or those whose dictionaries I add manually.  Is that right?  In addition to Latin, I have Greek installed in Windows but it doesn't appear in Affinity.  I don’t see a dictionary for Latin (not surprisingly, although I thought there was one available somewhere but I can’t find it).

If so, what is the best way to handle non-supported languages?  I can set the language to ‘None,’ which gets rid of the red squiggles, but it would be nice if I could set the language correctly.  Then there is the issue of hyphenation.  Word will hyphenate my Latin text with reasonable accuracy, even though there is no Latin dictionary installed.  It would be nice if Publisher would do likewise.

Do you know if there's a way to open the OXT files without having LibreOffice installed? I tried to look for la_LA files last night and couldn't find ones that weren't OXT or SOX extensions.

think you can rename them to .zip and then unzip them.

Thanks everyone, and particularly to David.  The LibreOffice dictionary works fine in Affinity Publisher, and I now have Latin hyphenation in Libre Office to boot.  Making a folder la-LA results in a spelling entry for unknown language and unknown locate (which works but is not elegant).  I noticed that Windows uses la-VA, so I tried that and it shows up in Affinity as Latin (Holy See).  I don't live at the Vatican, but at least it says 'Latin' not unknown.

la_LA is Latin_Laos. I don't think the country code matters so when I installed it I switched mine to la_VA, too, as I saw others online recommend.

APub V1 in macOS uses a default option "Latin" for Hyphenation (and Script) which gets auto-set if I choose to fill a frame with the default filler text. It appears to work different than the hyphenations for Italian, French, German, English. I haven't installed any additional or custom Latin dictionary.
