I'm pretty sure that won't work. Let's see if my steps and video are sufficient, before you muck around with your system :)

Now I don't know if this is significant but I 'UPDATED' to the msi exe version as soon as it was available to me and I still have that file available rather than downloading from serif. I can send it to you if you wanted to retry with that!

No need, as far as I'm concerned. :)

Many thanks Walt & Dangerous for your help here!

I can confirm that today I re-installed Affinity Designer 2.0.4 and on first launch selecting Download instantly began downloading the MSIX installer, but then on subsequent launches (or checks through Help > Check for updates) I was correctly set to the 'Updates' page, where I could select the download version I wanted.

I'll be getting this logged with our devs now, to stop this from occurring in the future and hopefully make the update process of EXE versions easier to follow :)

@walt.farrell - Our team believes this only occurs if you have previously installed the MSIX version of the app, then uninstalled and installed the EXE version.

When being prompted to update the app has cached the knowledge of the MSIX build externally, and hence automatically downloads the MSIX installer.

This likely explains why you were seeing different behaviour across apps & it should already be fixed in 2.1, meaning the same should hopefully not occur when we release 2.2 :)

The issue "When being offered an update in the EXE version, occasionally the app auto-downloads the MSIX version, rather than navigating to the Updates page with the download options" (REF: MSIX-37) has been fixed by the developers in build "2.1.0.1799".

This fix is in the current customer release.
If you still experience this problem once you are using that build version (or later) please reply to this thread including @Serif Info Bot to notify us

Shouldn't do, not if this is true:

and you have the installer for that build.  On Windows you can find the build number of the installer if you RIGHT click on the .exe file and choose 'properties' and look in the 'details' tab.

The bug is present in 2.0.4, which is the retail build prior to 2.1.0.1799. And it's 2.0.4 EXE version which is downloading the MSIX sometimes.

Once we have a 2.1.1 or a 2.2.0 retail build we can see if it's fixed.

I've been on vacation for three weeks now. Today I started AP again for the first time and immediately got the information that the new version 2.1.0 was available. In addition the question whether it should be installed. No option to choose whether .EXE or .MSIX. I confirmed and it installed the MSIX version
directly. No download of an installation file. If I check for updates, I'm "up to date".
How do I get an EXE version now?

If you had a button labeled Install, then you were running the MSIX version, and so it installed the updated MSIX version for you.

If you had been running the EXE/MSI version, the button would have been labeled Download, and clicking it would have taken you to the Download page where you could choose the version you wanted. (Note: there is, though, a bug in the 2.0.4 EXE/MSI version which sometimes will cause the Download button to directly download the MSIX version by mistake. That bug has been fixed in 2.1.0.)
