What Pixel Brushes were used (in a sample Affinity uploaded)?!

Recommended Posts

I am in desperate need to know what type of pixel brush was used to create these smooth creamy tones on the face. 😭
I've tried everything and can't seem to find anything that creates a similar effect. The only brushes I've seen be able to do this seamlessly is in Krita.

Is this a pixel brush that comes with Affinity, or would it need to be bought?

  • If it comes with Affinity, what might it be under AND how might you use it to get this effect
  • If it needs to be bought - where?!

Its beautiful and I love this style so much!  😭 Any suggestions or help would be much appreciated - thankyousomuch!

Also a suggestion to a tutorial in the same style would be so absolutely amazing! If possible. If anyone knows. 👁️ 👄 👁️

The images I am referencing to are from the samples available on Affinity Designer 2. It is Robert Herzig's work titled, "Shihatsu Densha".

It doesn't just look like that, it's an effect layer with noise.

There are brushes available, for example from Frankentoon, True Grid, DAUB or Ian Barnard, but all these brushes are not suitable for full-area, over the whole drawing area, overlay.

They are on Artstation if you want to find and ask the artist. This piece is up there but I didn't see any commentary about brushes anywhere.

I don't see this in my Samples as an option. My samples are far fewer in quantity so wondering if maybe they came with one of your brush sets? The one time the new brush history feature might've justified itself lol... Of course there's no icon for it in the Layers panel.

@debraspicher Yes! I was actually was thinking of going that route, but I didn't want to bother him unnecessarily as I figured it was just my being new to the program. But now I might do that - thanks so much!
@thomaso @Komatös Yes, I figured there was definitely noise added (maybe an overlay?) and I also saw there were some vector shapes that were used to create certain shadows too, but I was also inspecting the layers and saw there looked to be some brush work done too. Also thank you so much for the brushes suggestions!

I know this thread seems to be about Designer but you can get a similar, though probably not as nice, effect in Photo by simply using the Live Add Noise Filter.

See attached image where I’m using the non-live Add Noise Filter so it’s easier to see the difference – noisy version on the left. (You might need to open the image properly to see the noise properly.)

By doing this you can work with simpler gradient-filled vectors and easily switch the noise on/off as you go.

Adding one of the Live Blur Filters below the noise filter may give a pleasing effect in some cases.

It's in the Designer 2 Samples for me. As you mentioned having fewer samples, you might be looking in Photo 2.

A layer of type "(Pixel)" is not unambiguos concerning its initial creation: Once a layer, a bunch of layers, a group and filters get rasterized their initial creation process gets 'hidden'.

It's brushwork. Disabling the texture layer and then playing around with the actual Pixel layers, it's definitely visible. To me it looks like a simple round or maybe variation of it. I personally like painting in ovals at a 45ish-deg tilt for creating quick brushwork and that's initially what I thought it looked like.
