SF13 Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 Since getting Affinity Photo, I have often converted RGB documents to the CMYK US SWOP profile. I've done it many, many times. Today, suddenly, the CMYK US SWOP profile is not showing up as an option. Very few CMYK profiles are. The profiles are still on my hard drive. I've tried to import them, but they still don't show up. I've removed the program completely and reinstalled it. Still, they don't show up. I've tried numerous documents created over a long period of time. The profile randomly shows up on a couple, but doesn't for the majority of them. I can discern no difference in the documents it does show up for. I've tried different file extensions, files created on Affinity Photo as well as documents created on other software. It doesn't show up, even on the .afphoto files. My whole reason for getting Affinity was this ability to switch between the profiles. As far as I'm aware, I have changed no settings or preferences. But I am more than happy to be told I've switched some setting in error. I actually hope it is that simple! Lol. What would cause this sudden disappearance and how do I get the CMYK US SWOP profile back for all files? Thank you in advance for your assistance! Quote
walt.farrell Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, @SF13. That certainly seems odd. Which Affinity application are you using, and what OS? If you can find one where it works, can you provide a screenshot showing the application window and the profiles you're seeing? And then another screenshot showing where it didn't work? If these are documents you can share, it would be nice to have a copy of each, too. In that case, if they are .png or .jpg documents can you Zip them and upload them in that format so the forum software does not modify them, please? SF13 Posted October 16, 2022 Author Posted October 16, 2022 Thank you! I'm using Affinity Photo (version 1.10.5.1342) on Windows 11. I haven't changed any of my software since I converted profiles before. I've done it several times this year in various documents. I've never had this issue in the past. And I can recreate it. The last two screenshots are literally a quick scribble in a new RGB document. When I try to convert the CMYK US SWOP is not an option. Quote
walt.farrell Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 This seems like a silly thing to mention, but in your 2nd and 5th screenshots you have not scrolled the list to the bottom. You have scrolled to the bottom in the others. What do you see if you finish scrolling down? SF13 Posted October 16, 2022 Author Posted October 16, 2022 The 2nd and 5th show the top of the list. It's the same dropdown as the other two. Exactly the same image. One screenshot shows the top of the list and the other shows the bottom of the list. 2 and 5 are the top of the list, 1 and four are the bottom of the list in the same box. Quote

walt.farrell Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 Sorry; I misunderstood. Perhaps because I thought you were showing one where it worked and one where it didn't (as I had asked). In that case, it seems to be missing for me in Photo, too. Though it seems present when doing a color conversion in Designer. Very strange. SF13 Posted October 16, 2022 Author Posted October 16, 2022 Something is certainly blocking it. The same file opened on two different computers, running the same version of Affinity, get different results. One does have the color profile as an option. One doesn't. I don't understand why it wasn't fixed when I removed the program and downloaded it again. Or why it wasn't fixed by removing the program and downloading a previous version. Could it be something in the settings that I might have enabled (or disabled) in error? Quote

The Affinity applications simply use the profiles they find installed on the system, unless you have added any specifically by using File > Import ICC Profile.... Therefore remoing/reinstalling the application would not have any effect on a problem like this. Or on most Affinity problems, frankly, in my experience. SF13 Posted October 16, 2022 Author Posted October 16, 2022 That's frustrating and doesn't explain the difference. Though I have to disagree that Affinity doesn't come with color profiles. I locate the color profiles, like US SWOP, by going into the Program Files>Affinity>Resources>icc. This color profile was definitely one of those acquired when Affinity was added to my machine. I understand other color profiles can be added, but the specific CMYK profile I am trying to use was provided by Affinity. I understand they didn't necessarily create it themselves in the first place, but it's one that comes pre-loaded. Quote
walt.farrell Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 Thanks. I must be wrong about Affinity not including them, then. Sorry. I find them in Program Files/Affinity/<application>/Resources/icc, too. SF13 Posted October 16, 2022 Author Posted October 16, 2022 That's okay I really appreciate your help. I just wanted to exclude the possibility there was some issue with a profile I might have myself. This is a head scratcher. It's also confusing that I can't import the profile either. In a file that doesn't have the option, I've tried going to File>Import and I can find the profile and select it, but nothing happens. It still doesn't appear as an option. Quote
thomaso Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 FWIW, I have on mac this profile in a system folder (not user) … in an "old" folder ("Recommended", created by an Adobe app installation), whereas "Recommended" exists as link in the macOS > Library > ColorSync > Profiles folder along with all other profiles. So, maybe it doesn't harm if you copy the missing profile from the Affinity app folder to the according profiles folder of Windows …? RichardMH Posted October 17, 2022 Posted October 17, 2022 I use Windows 11 and also don't seem to have it. However, it is the default CMYK option in my Colour preferences. (Edit->Preferences->Colour). Go figure. Quote

But here's the workaround, perhaps this works on win11 too? On W11 i've gone through re-installing the faulty .NET update (KB5017264), opened an RGB .JPG and found that I had to follow this workaround to get the SWOP profile to populate in my profiles list. It doesn't appear to just affect CMYK, as I saved an .afphoto file with a CMYK profile and went to convert it to sRGB 2.1/8, which was missing from the list until I changed to the LAB/16 option and back. I'll mention this on the FAQ page, after uninstalling the update the issue has gone. walt.farrell 1 Quote

And users are, if they choose to remove the Windows update in question (and possibly avoid any .NET updates in the future). It is up to Serif if they want to reveal more about the issue, and whether it can be expected that a future Windows .NET update could fix these issues, as well. It is known that other applications are affected by the buggy Windows update, too, not just Affinity. It appears to be any application written to use the WPF framework provided by Windows. Microsoft should be fixing their bug.
