How to change default size of the color picker in Affinity Photo

Recommended Posts

Dear all,

is there any way in Affinity Photo to set a default size for the color picker tool?!
Everytime I start the application or open an image the picker size is reset to 1x1 pixel
and to resize it manually everytime is unneccessary work.
Preferably I would like to have something like 5x5 or 17x17.

It would also be great to have it change automatically depending on file and resolution.

Thanks in advance

Unfortunately it's not possible currently to set this tool to default to a different radius, my apologies - however I will be sure to log this as an improvement with our developers now, to be considered for a future update :)

Please note -

I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time.

Should you require a response from the team in a thread I have previously replied in - please Create a New Thread and our team will be sure to reply as soon as possible.

Many thanks!

I was just doing a search in hopes somebody had posted how to do this already. I saw it done on YT a few months ago and never did save that particular video and now I would like to adjust the pixel size of the color picker but don't know how to do it. Would anyone know how to get that done >now< since Affinity has made it possible since this post first went up? I tried searching for it in 'Online Help' but I had no luck finding it.

Thanks!

WB

Use the Radius control on the Context toolbar.

Could you send me a screenshot of the Radius Control because my blind self have failed to come across it yet. I've scanned over everything and pulled up 'Customize Toolbar' and I don't see anything labeled Radius control.

The toolbar in question isn't the main toolbar, it's the Context toolbar (which can't be customized):

Edited to add: I've just noticed that you quoted my previous post as it appeared before I edited it, so you may have missed this important bit:

Yes, I did miss it.

I don't know what the problem is over here but for some reason it doesn't show up on my context toolbar when I have the color picker chosen. I'll try it again in the morning when I'm bright eyed and bushy-tailed. Maybe it's me.missingcontext.png.cf5e51809a1254036e2b2c4dacd0a13d.png

Your screenshot shows the Context toolbar with the Rectangle Tool active. As its name suggests, the items on that toolbar change according to the context. Press i to switch to the Color Picker Tool (eyedropper, hence the shortcut).

Your screenshot also shows that you’re using the Photo persona in Publisher, not the Photo app itself. That doesn’t really matter here, but I’m surprised to see that you’re using a beta version.

Make sure you are using the colour picker from the Tools Panel.

The colour picker in the Colour Panel does not give you any context toolbar options

If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

Thanks for that bit of info. But unfortunately, it still isn't showing up for me.

@Alfred - I always use Beta now. Just started one day and never got out of the habit. And opening up everything in Publisher makes my workflow much more seamless because I'm always needing to go back and forth between Designer and Photo. Before I replied to you initially, I pulled up the Photo app to see if I would get anything different. And as you already know... I didn't.

Off to bed I go...

As Carl and Alfred mentioned, make sure you're using the Color Picker Tool (from the Tools panel).

I acknowledged what Carl mentioned in my last reply last night. I tried it that way as well and there was no difference.

Once I jump into Affinity again a little later, I'll see if I was just missing something simple. Hopefully that's all it was. I tend to do that more times than I care to remember. 😕
