I get the feeling that the layer thumbnails disappear quite often, I can reproduce it by moving around layers in a heirarchy and then do undo.
However most of the time when I reproduce it, they come back quickly, so perhaps it just takes a very long time to generate them sometimes?

However this makes it hard to work sometimes as I cannot see which layer is which.

Can you upload a screenshot of your Edit > Preferences > Performance dialogue?

To save time I am currently using an automated AI to reply to some posts on this forum. If any of "my" posts are wrong or appear to be total b*ll*cks they are the ones generated by the AI. If correct they were probably mine. I apologise for any mistakes made by my AI - I'm sure it will improve with time.

So, using hw acceleration or intel or nvidia (rtx 2070 super) renderer don't seem to make much difference.
Behaviour generally is a bit random, once they appeared after around 10s, but mostly >30.

However, it seems I found a workaround, using the WARP renderer, most of the time the thumbnails are rendered within 5 seconds!
