I'm a first time user for Affinity Designer. I've switched over from Adobe Illustrator which I've used for a long time.

I need help here. Is there way to print a part of a a picture/art in Designer like you are able to in Illustrator? Usually I work on a 120x120 document size and I print out sections from time to time. I use the print tool in Illustrator for that. I don't see a print tool for Designer and I'm not able to print sections like I used to. Is there way to do that?

Thanks.

Welcome to the Serif Affinity forums, @FrankK.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean by "sections", and I'm not familiar with that tool. But in the Print dialog, see what options you have available in the Range field. That should at least let you choose between the entire document, a specific Artboard, or the current Selection (set of objects you've selected on the canvas or in the Layers panel).

Is the 120 x 120 ...??? Is it just too large for the printer? You want to print out the upper left corner or the middle 10 inch square?

I think you may be able to use the Export persona and just export a slice as a PDF. Then print that pdf. Just make sure your slice is the size of a sheet of paper or smaller and you should be good to go.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

I like using the export option "Selection Area". This allows you to use a simple rectangle object to define the part for export. It will export everything which is visible inside this shape. The rectangle doesn't have to have a stroke assigned (which would occur in the export).

It even works if you place the object at the bottom of the layers panel / underneath all layers. Then an assigned fill would not appear on export, respectively appear in transparent artboard areas only.

@Old Bruces suggestion above would likely be best if I am understanding the question correctly, you can find out more about the export persona and slices here:

Slices Panel - https://affinity.serif.com/tutorials/designer/desktop/video/301822426/

I hope this helps!

Another way in AD is ...

  1. to select the Artboard tool and grab/select with that the wanted area/section to print out
  2. perform a print out of the just created Artboard area/section now
  3. afterwards perform an undo (Ctrl-z/Cmd-z) of the previously generated Artboard step, so you get back to your initial base document

This way no PDF export etc. is needed at all here for making a section print out.
