I like it. :)
May I ask.. how big is your background layer (pixels), and on what terms do you decide the size?

If I'm understanding the question correctly, the document is A3 size, 300 dpi.

The attachment is cropped down to show a bit more detail, there's an area of image around it and then a further area of white space around the whole image acting as a pasteboard.

I've been working on this a little bit here and there, I stopped for a couple of weeks because there was one AI feature missing from AD that I wanted to use – vector distortion/warp/envelope tools. I was hoping to do the whole image in AD but I got to the point where I just wanted to get it done, so I had to skew the artwork for the book cover in Photoshop and place in in the file, rather than just skewing/distorting the vector artwork as I wanted to do.

I might do a few more bits like highlights, etc, but otherwise it's fairly much done.
