AllisterG Posted August 12, 2021 Share Posted August 12, 2021 So I've been trialling Publisher and Photo for personal use, mostly due to the fact that I'm getting fed up with Adobe's extortionate pricing. I also run an architectural practice and we have often used Illustrator to 'render' our drawings using photo real material representations. Another opportunity has come up to do this on an important project and so we downloaded a trial of Designer, thinking that (as with Photo) we'd not notice a huge amount of difference between it and Illustrator. When I couldn't find a way to import a dwg I turned to the net and here I am ... Why on earth is there no import export of the world's most common CAD format?? GarryP Posted August 13, 2021 Share Posted August 13, 2021 Welcome to the forums @AllisterG This question could have been answered by a simple forum search (for either “DWG” or “DXF”): Serif don’t generally give us reasons why things haven’t been done or when things will happen, for various good reasons. A Designer would be great technical illustration tool if a few enhancements were made. CAD it is not, but data exchange with CAD applications would help many of us. The ability to export / import to DXF/DWG (as well as WebP, JPEG XL, ICO, ...............) would be welcomed by many users, and would expand the capabilities of Affinity applications. However, in a situation where the application does not yet have even the basic functions (the requirements forum is full of them), which applications for drawing, editing photos and publishing "must have", it can be expected, that CAD improvements will have lower priorities. It used to be simple to import a DWF file into Illustrator although all the layers broke up into random lines and groups. My ancient version of Illustrator (CS6) won't even to that anymore. Sometimes a pdf will also export with layers and I have had some success with that in AD but not now. Apparently there are a bunch of things that have to be set when exporting from AutoCad to make either the DWF or PDF usable by other applications. In my business, I use AutoCad maps all the time in Illustrator by overlaying information. I am not an AutoCad user and this is a simple and efficient way to put in various types of information in a colourful graphic format. I am pretty much devastated that AD has not seen fit to include this function as I am totally committed to the software now. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Rastupin Posted August 18, 2022 Share Posted August 18, 2022 (edited) Glad i'm not the only one that is beyond surprised that this basic functionality to export vectors for CAD is still missing after some years of development (I need DXF for fusion360 and diptrace/Altium PCB design software) fusion360 is somewhat solved with SVG, but no solution for my PCB design. it did not even cross my mind that such basic functionality would be missing before buying.
