Transfer my system to new mac and can't open my old files

Recommended Posts

In English that phrase translates to something like: Failed to open the file due to lack of authorization.
I’m not a Mac expert but, when you migrated to a new Mac did you give yourself a different user name on the new machine?
If the files you copied over had security which was specific to a certain user name (your old one) than that might be what the problem is.
If it is the problem then you will probably need a Mac expert to tell you how to alter the permissions on the files.
(It might be easier to alter the permissions on the old machine and then transfer the files over again.)

Odd.
It might help someone to see what the problem is if you show us the permissions (screen-shot) of the same example file on both machines (can’t remember how you do this on Macs, and it’s probably changed since I last did it myself some time ago).
I’m not the best person to be advising on this so I will leave this thread to other people who know better.

Did you purchase the Affinity application from Serif or from the Mac App Store?

I don't use Big Sur so I am not sure of the details but in the  Privacy tab of System Preferences > Security & Privacy you may need to add your Affinity app(s) to either the Full Disk Access or Files & Folders sections.

Giving us a screen-grab of the error box can often by useful but, in this case, I was asking to see the permissions of the files.
See my attached image – I can’t remember how you get this, the attached image is from a wiki.

I presume that’s the ‘Get Info’ window, accessed via ‘File > Get Info’ or the ‘Get Info’ option from the context menu displayed when you right-click, or by using the keyboard shortcut Cmd(⌘)+i.

Beyond the file-info window (cmd-i) about potentially missing permissions, can you show the same for the volume (disk/drive) where these files are stored? Like this:

Also, I wonder with what method you did the migration. Was it e.g. during a clean macOS install + user files from a backup of your iMac / or via the MigrationAssist.app / or as manually initiated copies (drag/drop) /  … ? – And is the volume (disk/drive) which contains your Affinity files the macOS system/boot-volume, too, e.g. because you store your data in your macOS User folders?

The problem was solved. I removed some fonts from the system (one of the used by the documents I could not open) after this and  restart I can open the files.

Great you managed to solve it! – But note, missing fonts don't cause such an issue or error message, instead the files get opened + display a missing font dialog for just a few seconds.

Note, beyond macOS also Affinity itself has a font cache. You can reset this in Affinity either via Preferences > Miscellaneous > Fonts  –  or, when opening the app, by holding the ctrl-key and selecting the according reset option from the dialog.

In all situations of a font cache reset it's recommended to reboot the computer to make the reset work properly and avoid any former cash data being kept in memory.
