Automated 'New Version' Update Option

Recommended Posts

I'm just thinking it might save a lot of registered users a lot of time if, ... there was an automated notice in all three applications which would announce to the user when a new version of the app is available.  In other apps we use, it is common to find an option under the 'Help' link in the top bar, that offers a 'Check for New Version' option.

They appear to maintain registration security, and it just takes the app to their update server(s), checks what version is already installed on the user's desktop, and I'm assuming it checks for registration compliance.  many then offer another link to go ahead and download and install.  It's quick, effective, and reliable.

Just a thought.

All of the Affinity apps should notify you at launch if there is a new version available. Is that not happening for you? :/

No, I don't believe so.  I received an email the other day stating there was a new version, but upon opening Photo, nothing signalling it. Currently have 1.9.2.1035

That is the current version on Windows.

Did you purchase from Serif (Affinity Store), or from the Microsoft Store?

Purchased from Serif.  Have been for years.

Patrick posted a reference at:

Again, that just creates another "step" in that the paying customer, has to again go out to another reference to stay updated.  My original suggestion eliminates all this unnecessary work in order to simply stay current.  Serif can do better.  I don't like mentioning other products, but for example-sake.  We use Bvuckup2 (https://bvckup2.com/)  for our archiving and backup.  If you test their trial, you will see an example of the update function.  Comparatively, it is fast, efficient, and intuitive in its access point.  Why Serif wouldn't offer a similar system is beyond me.

Just sayin'.

Having purchased from Serif, and as you're already at the latest level, it is likely that you were notified of the update, and offered the opportunity to download, and did so.

This is not true - the customer is notified of a new version every time the application is started.

I wonder whether the confusion here stems from the fact that the current version on Mac is 1.9.3, not 1.9.2.

No, sorry. I just knew that Mac should be on 1.9.3, and I don't think the build numbers (1035) are common between Mac and Windows. So I used complex logic rather than reading the obvious info in the signature.

How about a small improvement to the Update-notification by telling me about updates to ALL my installed Affinity-Applications - not just the one Application I launched right now?
e.g. when launching Photo I am told: there is an Update for Photo available + there are also Updates for Designer and Publisher (including an Option to Update all of them at once right now.)

During the whole time that I have been using Affinity, I have never experienced that only one single application is updated (which is based on a unified concept of applications, see for example StudioLink). Therefore, if you receive a notification from one application, it is certain that the others have been updated as well.

My suggestion results in only one workflow-Interruption instead of being notified to download and run updates up to 3 times.

Why should there be a triple workflow interruption? I thought it was clear enough from my post - update all your applications at the first update prompt. Changing the name of the application in the address bar of the update page, or having it saved in Favorites, is perhaps not such a problem.

P. S. Personally, I never do this, because after forum experience with problems and malfunctions of applications after their update, I think it is always better to install one, and only after testing the functionality to update the others.
