Colin Red Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 hi there, are the dodge and burn tools in AP destructive ........ can the adjustments be safely rolled back using the history panel or should I be using adjustment layers when working on an image. The video tutorial that James Ritson created for AF does not show the layers panel so there is no way of telling if he is using layers in that video. Colin Quote
j3rry Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 I use a extra pixel layer filled with 50% grey for dodge&burn. Edit: Set the pixel layer to overlay or soft light. Quote 24" iMAC Apple M1 chip, iPad Air 11", MACOS Sonoma & iPadOS, Affinity V2-Universallizenz

Yep but be sure to set the grey layer blend mode to Overlay j3rry 1 Quote Microsoft Windows 11 Home, Intel i7-1360P 2.20 GHz, 32 GB RAM, 1TB SSD, Intel Iris Xe Affinity Photo - 24/05/20, Affinity Publisher - 06/12/20, KTM Superduke - 27/09/10
Ron P. Posted January 26, 2021 Posted January 26, 2021 Actually you do not need to fill the added pixel layer with 50% grey. Just add the pixel layer, change the blend mode to Overlay. Now painting with a black brush burns, and then switch to white to dodge. Has the identical effect as filling it. Oh you will need to lower the opacity of the brush, down to around 10%. Yes, you can roll back using History (which was also part of your question). But yes, they are destructive unless you work on an added layer as suggested above. (In that sense, all the (edit: raster-based) brush tools are destructive.)
