Affinity can't detect a particular font in PSD

Recommended Posts

I've attached a test.psd file which I've created using Photopea. Font used is Rothman (free). I've this font installed in my system. This is how the test file should appear.

If I open the same PSD file in Affinity apps, it immediately warns that Document contains missing fonts!

Is this a bug? I tried opening this PSD in Photoshop and faced no issues.

According to Publisher (1.9 beta) the font in that PSD file is named Rothman-Plain:

Do you have a font with that exact name?

Yes.

But that is "Rothman Plain", not "Rothman-Plain".

In Publisher, does Rothman show up at all in the font listings? And if so, how does it show up?

This is how it shows up in Photo.

Does that PSD appears with correct font for you in Photo?

This seems to be a very old font, maybe not following the current naming conventions. @LibreTraining could say more, as he/she/it is the font specialist here. But you can easily replace the font by selecting the text and using the Rothman appearing in the font pulldown in APhoto.

Yes, I can simply replace the font. But I'd like to know why Affinity can't detect it correctly while Photopea and Photoshop does.

Perhaps because the exact mechanisms of font naming and recognition are complex. But as Joachim said, there are others here with more expertise than either of us has in this area.

Affinity apps expect the fonts to be properly configured to current standards. Adopy apps are better at guessing how to use fonts which are not constructed properly. And some older and/or less sophisticated apps accept these errors and just work.

The name fields in the Rothman font are incorrectly configured. Older TrueType fonts usually only have the style group which should only include the sub-family options of Regular/Italic/Bold/Bold Italic - nothing else. In this font the style group sub-family is set to "Plain" - so the Affinity apps are confused by the unrecognized term when importing. The PostScript name is also improperly formatted, but I do not know if it is used here.

Note, on my phone right now so I cannot look closer or fix the font at the moment.
