Well I can make a selection but the  lines disappear and no selection has been made. Rectangular works fine on the same image

Confirmations?

Sorry, Rick. Both forms of selection tool worked on the image I tried them on.

Silly question, probably, but have you verified that you're in New or Add mode, and not Intersect?

That was it. It was set to something like 350. I have to play with that to see what I might have done to change that from zero
