There is a (critical) bug three years old. Why not fix???

Recommended Posts

My story may be a bit rude, but I'll tell you today. After a long wait, I can't stand it.

I am a Korean user. I bought affinity photo and designer this year because I support affinity as a counterpart of Photoshop.

But I can't use this software. Because there is a fatal bug. (So I still use Photoshop.)

On PCs with Korean fonts (or Asian fonts) installed, Affinity Photo and Designer will almost freeze when you scroll through the font selection window.

This bug is at least "3 years old" and has been reported by many.

See the list below.

All are saying the same bug. Affinity staff said it's a known issue and no answer for when to fix it.

Hi @Maninweb,
We are aware of some issues with Korean fonts causing the app to freeze/crash and this has already been logged with our developers.
I'm afraid that for the meantime, the only option would be to go through the Korean fonts and, disable them one by one and see which one is causing the crash. Sorry :(
Thanks,
Gabe.

Korean forums don't recommend affinity because of this issue when someone asks if they can use Affinity as a replacement for Photoshop.

Some people who bought affinity speak cynically. They feels like Affinity developers don't seem to be interested.

I think Affinity Photo itself is a great product. But it's hard to understand that there's a fatal bug for at least three years that doesn't fix it.

Today I retested this problem after installing the latest version of Affinity before renewing my adobe cc license.

The problem still existed. I also downloaded and installed the latest beta. The problem still existed.

I'm not sure how many Asian users will use Affinity.

So this problem may not be taken seriously by Affinity.

I'm a software developer too, so I know how bothersome and difficult to fix bugs.

But I think this is too bad.

The steps to reproduce the problem are clear, and there is plenty of time to fix it,

but not to fix it is only interpreted that there is no intention of fixing it.

It's a paid graphics software that doesn't let you choose fonts ... and doesn't fix known bugs forever..

I regret buying Affinity Photo and Designer now.

I don't, because I'm claiming the purchase as a business expense since I bought it to add on to my self employment possibilities, but I only use it for select tasks because the negligence of the addition of workflow improvements and relatively simple tasks that I could have done in Photoshop no problem that I have to find a hack to get around in Affinity, well, I could also find a hack to get around in Clip Studio Paint, which is by far preferable for drawing related tasks. What I have regretted is pretty much any time I've ever used Affinity as my main program to produce a piece of art. I always end up back in Clip Studio Paint. Even when I used Photoshop. Affinity is good for a few select tasks, but it's fairly obvious they have no intention of implementing the vast majority of suggestions because, you see, they already got our money. They don't care if we're happy.

Of the suggestions I've made, one has been implemented. It does improve workflow, and it was a very simple fix.

There are tons of Asian artists. Not fixing this bug seems like a mistake that will alienate a large population who might otherwise try it and recommend it. I do recommend it if someone wants vector implementation, or non-destructive layer techniques. I futzed around in Designer a bit and it's much easier to grasp than Illustrator. But it's no good for what I usually use digital art to create, mindbogglingly overcomplicated in some arenas, with little attention to alternative workflows. The creators seem to have imagined that everyone creates like them. It certainly has its limitations at this point and is not a full "Adobe substitute" at this point, though with it and Clip and Corel Painter at my disposal there is only a few things I miss from Photoshop, which was the easily warpable text, stackable text strokes, the ability to copy and paste layer styles in a couple clicks (rather than going through a convoluted process of saving a style and applying it to a new layer, but my request of having a quicker way to apply a style to a new layer was dismissed because 'you can already do that', which you can, just much more complicated than I would like). Also, save each layer to its own file. Oh... the ability to just hold alt and click with any tool on to get color selected... now THAT's the main reason I can't see myself converting to primary use of Affinity, the fact that I have to click several times to switch my color to the one that was underneath my cursor for a tool other than the paintbrush (switch to the brush, click to pick it up, then go to the bucket, then click on the eyedropper thingger...) aaahhhhhhhhh in every good program you can just hold down alt to switch to the color picker eyedropper at any time, why Affinity, why. And why can't I eyedropper color pick from my file from the styles menu? There's an eyedropper there but it does nothing. But, my complaints are smaller workflow things which may eventually be implemented, who knows. One thing I requested WAS added, so, I know it's not impossible. It was a very easy change though. But, since I've made requests they've gone out of their way to implement a few fancy things which no one usually needs, so, I ultimately feel they don't care about changing things to make them better for current users, but only adding flashy features that might hook new buyers who need a niche feature and don't realize it has all kinds of weird UI quirks that will never be improved.

Korean fonts is a complicated bug, but, one that will alienate an entire people group with many artists in their midst, so I think that's a mistake to not work out, but maybe one that is quite time consuming with a small team.

I still don't think it would be a mistake for someone to buy Affinity's software, it is good for the price, but it would be good if they were honest about some of the limitations up front as well as its perks, instead of acting like it's superior to Adobe. I'm still 100% more likely to recommend Affinity over Adobe, but, I will keep in mind this bug exists, and not recommend it to anyone who uses the Korean language, and maybe any symbol languages because it might be buggy in more than one language implementation.

I have empathy, I know it's a lot of work, I suppose they just don't know what to do for this one.
