  1. Hi all, It's been a while (don't ask) but I'd thought I'd update this list. There are now 18 tutorials on the channel, more to come. Created to enhance your skills and knowledge of Affinity Photo & Designer and take them to the next level. Don't forget to subscribe to stay up to date. These were created before the 1.5 Beta but you'll still benefit from them. If you would like to see anything in particular just leave a comment below. They are all FREE and always will be, why? Because 1. The apps are so awesome and changed the way I work 2. There is such a great community on here and 3. Matt P is really cool ;) (thank you). AFFINITY DESIGNER TUTORIALS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. (In this we create something similar to a Google advert) 8. Preview Affinity Designs on a mobile device 9. Organising Assets using Lingo (Created before the 1.5 Beta) AFFINITY PHOTO TUTORIALS 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. What are Personas? 7. How to remove spots and blemishes 8. Create a 1-5 star rating system (Cool trick to organise your pics) 9. Using Apple Photos with Affinity Photo Allan
  2. About The Box Set is hundreds of vector and raster brushes made for Affinity Photo & Designer. Each brush was handmade using real materials scanned at high resolutions and crafted to simulate real media. I wanted the origin of the brushes to have a heritage of the materials they are simulating. Scanning pools of watercolor, swatches of paint, and stipples of charcoal contributed to creating brushes with the same idiosyncratic material magic. My only request is that you take these brushes, with their clever names, as suggestions. They work superbly out of the box, but I strongly encourage you to adjust the sliders, rearrange or remove the textures, and discover how they can suit your hand(s). Make. Discover. Repeat. Cheers and happy art making, -Jef (WREN) RASTER BRUSHES For use in Affinity Photo and Designer. The blending brush in the Oil Set is the only one exclusive to Affinity Photo. DRAFTING INK OIL Oil Brush Dynamics Most oil brushes have blending built into pen pressure. With a single brush and hue you can adjust the luminosity of the stroke- giving it an oily blend. The Brush's color in the example above is the color of the background. A normal pressure gives you the hue without any lightening or darkening. 3. Hey guys, I was wondering if I am able to switch from mac to pc version of affinity when I purchase this program. I don't currently own a mac or might not get one at all. So If I do buy the mac version, could I get the windows version when it does get released in the future. Thank you for taking a look at this question, and thank you for helping me with this issue. I do own a Windows computer and sadly I have to transfer most of my files from pc to a mac in school or work area for working in different programs that are not available to pc.
  4. I just switched from PC to Mac and I have a lot of files in AI created on my now dead PC. When I try to open my AI files with 'open in', AD is offered as default, but files are blank. What to do? Is possible to open AI files created on PC in AD? Do I need some additional soft to translate my old AI files, so that AD will see them?
  5. Consideration for having a larger delay before a window tries to absorb another on tabbing/docking of floating windows. Anyone that realizes the efficiency of Expose on a Mac will rarely have that many docked windows. By having windows constantly trying to merge right away while trying to get as much workspace for windows becomes disruptive. Or a check mark in preferences to turn the docking/merging off altogether.
  6. Hi, I have been using Illustrator for years, but after I tried this Affinity Designer, now I hate the subscription and uselessness of illustrator. For my work environment I need to use Windows, but I use Mac at home. So my question is, Are you planning to make Windows version? If you could... I would love to use it instead of illustrator...
  7. I have an AD file that is primarily created from Vector components and I need to send the file to an external graphics printing company, pretty urgently actually. This graphics company uses Windows and primarily wants an Acrobat PDF, or possibly an Illustrator file. The problem is, whenever I Export from AD to PDF it converts some of the Vector components to bitmaps, which then causes a lot of problems. I have even tried exporting to SVG and then converting that to PDF using Gapplin. However, that too results in vectors being converted to bitmaps. So, how do I export an AD vector-based document into another format where I can guarantee that the exported file preserves all the original vector information? I have attached a cut down version of the full document that shows the two components that get converted to bitmaps on export (I have also provided the PDF export). Thanks :) Affinity-Export.afdesign Affinity-Export.pdf
  8. Hi Affinity devs! It would have been great if Affinity Designer was able to export in emf (enhanced meta file) format. I believe it's a more widely supported format on the Windows platform than any of the current vector-based export formats that AD offers. Since Serif has a solid history of developing great windows applications, that would be a piece of cake, wouldn't it? ;) /Miro
  9. Hard to believe I'm the first one to request it, so I assume my quick search simply didn't involve the proper tags. :3 That said, please please please please consider developing for Windows. I have a Mac at work, sure, but they're going to demand I stay on the office-standard Photoshop (lest things get weird) and I don't feel like paying 5x the amount the hardware is worth, so I rock a Windows PC at home—but I'd love to get in on this. Adobe has been losing their luster with their ever increasing money-grabs, so I really want to support their competitors...but you all develop exclusively for Mac! xD There's love from us over in Windowsland to be shared—come to the dark side! We have cookies! :3 (But we delete them regularly for security reasons.)
  10. Hi guys! First off: congratulations on finally getting this baby out! Even though I am not a photographer or illustrator and won't spend most of my time on Affinity Photo, I do have to do some photo editing every now and then and, for my use cases, it's probably the best tool available around. I've always found Photoshop convoluted anyway and, never having gotten around to fully master it, I'm not really all too bothered by the APhoto “learning curve” I've read about on the forums… But I digress. Anyway, me being the nitpicker I am, I already have a little nit to pick, and that is window zooming behaviour, specifically in separated mode. I should begin with a pre-rant rant, a repost of sorts, as an introduction: I don't really like Serif's approach to a free-floating, non-dockable separated mode UI (in other words, I mean I'd rather have a fully dockable, auto-stretching, edge-to-edge panels *and toolbars*) and much prefer Adobe's approach, which not only allows you to fit all UI chrome to the screen's edges, it also restricts zooming of your windows all the way to the edges of said *UI chrome* and not of the screen itself. Serif's approach seems clumsy at best, as windows zoom all the way to the scren edges and, thus, both the toolbars and panels end up getting in the way. One of the few reasons that up until recently made me use the “separated mode” (a.k.a. classic, multi-window mode) in CS6 was being able to use Application Exposé to switch between open windows; nowadays, since I've quickly adhered to tabs (how could I not, with the number of files I must have open at any time now that I'm a proper professional?), I only use it for saving some precious vertical space (the sheer waste of space caused by that stupid, nearly useless and empty Adobe “Application Bar” is dumbfounding… As for Affinity, the top title bar also wastes some space but at least we can get around it by using fullscreen mode)… That is, except for Photoshop, where I live and die by the Classic Mac OS-like windowed approach and would never even consider using Adobe's windowed mode. I mean, it just *makes sense*, as image proportions and resolutions can be wildly variable, I sometimes have to process considerable numbers of mid- to small web/screen-ready images (and I'm sure I am not alone in that), and that also has the added benefit of allowing you to drag layers and effects between different windows/files… As for Affinity Photo… Even though I don't really like the current “Separated mode” approach, as I said, I was willing to put up with its [current, I hope] limitations if that meant I would get the same functional benefits as in Photoshop (I haven't put APhoto through its paces yet, but I'm willing to bet that I will). There is one choice on your part, however, that I find inexcusable, which is the zoom button behaviour. Since the separated mode and full-sized windows (not to be confused with fullscreen windows) are, as I said, mutually incompatible (or, at best, clumsy), shouldn't the zoom button (under Mavericks and below; I obviously also mean the classic behaviour still achievable in Yosemite by option-clicking the fullscreen button) adhere to the lifelong Classic Mac OS/OS X/Adobe standard of zooming to fit content instead of zooming to fit the screen size? I know this “zoom/shrink-to-fit content vs. zoom-to-fit screen” debate is as old and tired as OS X and its more proeminent full-screen apps (like, say, Mail – which goes far back into the NeXTSTEP days –, iTunes and iPhoto), but please bear with me and my rational for this suggestion: If I wanted to use the screen to the max for one particular project I could (and very likely would/will) just toggle the unified mode temporarily, plus the fullscreen mode if I *really* wanted to kick it up a notch… As it stands and as far as I could find it, there isn't a way to achieve that “zoom/shrink window to fit content” function, am I right? Ironically enough, you *can* zoom the content to fit the window size, so it stands to reason that, much happens already with content boxes in InDesign/QuarkXPress/Affinity Publisher (which I'm salivating for and will obviously feature such functionality), the opposite should be possible, too… All in all, I believe the current trend towards unified-window approaches and, concurrently and helathily, allowing for its classic counterpart (hey, choice is good, even if I find the implementation lacking a bit of polish and flexibility as I said), could finally put that debate to rest, at least in document types that have well-defined content boundaries. This default behaviour would, of course, make absolutely no sense in Affinity Publisher layouts or in a future version of Affinity Designer featuring multiple pages/artboards (AFAIK, that is still in the pipeline, right?), but it would fit in perfectly with many Affinity Photo use cases, IMHO… If you don't think they are enough to warrant it as a default, non-customizable behaviour, well, you could at least make it a toggeable preference on the User Interface tab.
  11. Hi I've just been over to have a peek at the Serif  based forum and saw some year old posts... https://community.serif.com/forum/photoplus/880/anything-for-macs Are the Affinity Staff allowed to poach ;) these Mac users? Ooh if only they knew then, what we know now.
  12. I have one question that may be one theme of my settings or just don't know. I use to change a lot among 3 or 4 windows within AD but now when I switch between some windows the last one changes to Export persona, so everytime I change to one window this appears in Export persona and is kind of annoying because i've to switch again to the Draw persona, so can somebody help me please. Thanks in advance.
  13. I have seen this topic come up a lot on these forums and in social media and I was just curious what kind of workflow people are using that would make working on multiple platforms beneficial. I first started using graphic apps like PageMaker, Freehand, and Photoshop in 1995 when the difference between Mac and PC probably hit it’s lowest point ever with the introduction of Windows 95. At the time it would have not been logical to develop for only one of those platforms given how little difference there was between the two of them. Being cross platform was helpful to me at the time since our graphics department at school was all Macs and the computers at my house were always PCs. Today my set up is nothing like it was in 1995. Nearly all my workflow (outside of a few Adobe apps) are all Mac based. This has to do with the fact that programs that focus on platform specific features, I feel, generally end up being better then their cross platform competitors. Here is a quick scan through my application folder: the Omnigroup apps, Transmit, Sketch, iDraw, Bento, iBooks, iBook Author, Billings, Pixelmator, Automator, HoudahSpot, Tembo, iWork, iLife, etc. If someone were to give me a PC to work on I don’t know what I would do since 80% of my workflow is not available on Windows. Adobe, on the other hand, appears to be attempting to be about as cross platform as possible. Just a couple of days ago I read an article that said they will be supporting Chrome OS in addition to Mac, Windows, iOS, (eventually) Android, and no doubt others. If you feel that being cross platform is “the right way to do things” then it seems like your ideal set up is already available today. Yes, Adobe costs more but if they are paying all their developers to support all these platforms then it needs to cost more. Since I don’t really use other platforms (meaning non Apple platforms) I don’t see why I need to have to pay for my software to be developed on those platforms any more. Personally I don’t see the value in being cross platform at all these days. From my point of view it is a dated concept that once made sense but a sea change has occurred over the decades since then. I have been waiting for 6 or 7 years for someone to take full advantage of features on the Mac with pro apps and that is finally starting to happen over the last couple of years. A windows port (or Linux, Android, etc) would force the developers to strip out most of the greatness that makes Affinity Designer Affinity Designer. Their product line without the foundation that it is built on would end up being a totally different product, one that is crippled. This then begs the question why don’t they just make a product that is Windows only? This is exactly what Serif is already doing. If any other platform makes logical sense to port Affinity to I think it would be iOS. Since Mac and iOS share so much of the same code base it seems most of the work would be in creating an interface for a touch screen which would seem manageable to me (ok, I’m not a developer so I probably shouldn’t say that with absolute certainty.) Also when you consider that as Affinity focuses on developing for the Mac iOS will at the same time continue to become more mature. Maybe all the Mac features are currently not available in iOS 8 but what about when it reaches iOS 10 or 11? I don’t mean for this post to sound pro-apple and anti-windows. I am just stating that for this product line it makes more sense for it to be single platform. Even if Microsoft succeeds in remedying the problem that is Windows 8 and Windows 10 comes out and it is a wonderful release I still don’t think that gives justification to support it’s development necessarily. Windows has a different foundation so it makes more sense for someone to develop a product that tries to take full advantage of the technologies that it provides from scratch. Another issue to deal with is that MS is so hit and miss regarding their OS releases. If Windows 10 is a success but Windows 11 flops (like Vista and WIndows 8) that is going to make developing for this platform difficult. Apple has generally had a proven track record with OS releases so Serif is basing their product line on a platform that will continue to improve and not get worse. Again if you have rational for what a cross platform solution would offer that an Apple based platform does not I would like to know what the rational is. We have seen a lot of companies become very successful by staying limited in focus so the argument for adoption of broader platform support would have to go up against a long list of arguments against it.
  14. Are there plans to make a Windows 7 version of the Affinity products? Many designers use Windows rather than Macintosh computers to design every day. I was excited to see an alternative to Adobe's Creative Cloud product. Bummed to see it's only for Apple computers.
  15. I'm a big fan of most of how AD works and looks now, but there are some functions i'd love to see: Tabs in 'separated mode' windows. Sort of like browsers work: you can have any amount of windows, with any amount of documents/tabs in them. Fullscreen mode to maximise working space. Same for Hide palettes/UI shortcut, sort of like TAB in photoshop. Dark menubar for OS X Yosemite. Custom palette designer: put random icons into a new, custom palette. I'd love to combine most used toolbar, transform, align and boolean icons into a single palette. Keyboard shortcut remap: tools (!), functions etc. Updatable smarter embeds: place document A into a document B, edit A and it's updated inside B. And a really big one: Automation. Think actions in photoshop: record any buttons/shortcuts/canvas operations into a macro and play it any time using a shortcut. Could be only menus at first implementation, then add palette buttons and then canvas operations like drawing, transforms etc. Keep up mind-blowing work you've been doing on AD, going at this rate this is going to be a no-brainer first-day purchase for any graphic designer.
