  1. Not necessarily a bug, but pretty strange. I edited a photo on Photo for iPad, and the file size is 25.4M, which is really abnormal for .afphoto files. So I edited the same photo on Mac, added the same adjustment layers to it, the file size is just 4.3M. (Original Photo 4M) I'm not sure if you're aware this, but I kinda curious about the cause.
  2. Hello Affinity Support and Team! I'm having some trouble diagnosing a couple problems I'm having on the saving and export ends of using Affinity Photo. When I open a high resolution RAW file (.NEF from Nikon) in AP, it opens up the Develop persona, of which I click "Develop" with no edits--and have turned all auto processing from the assistant off so it doesn't affect the image. When I save the file as is with no additional changes, the file size of the Affinity photo file is over ten times the high resolution file size. (See attached screen shots.) Is this normal? I'm also having trouble with the exports (JPEG best) of my photos retaining the same quality as what I see on my screen from AP. For starters, the exports look noisier/grainier than what's in the AP window, and the colors are a little off as well (though the colors aren't as noticeable as the noise). Is this normal as well, or is this a bug I'm experiencing? I've reviewed your exporting tutorials, and unfortunately they were not able to assist, even in copying the suggested workflows. Any help will be greatly appreciated in figuring out what's happening and how to best move forward with AP. Thanks! Computer Specs: iMac 24" (early 2009) OSX 10.11.6 (can't upgrade to Sierra or later due to hardware incompatibility) 2.66 GHZ Intel Core 2 Duo 4 GB DDR3 RAM AP Version: 1.5.2
  3. I am currently evaluating AP. I am curious as to what is happening when I open an existing jpg file and save it as a native .afphoto file? Original file: 5472 x 3648 x 24b JPEG 19495.0 KB AFPhoto file: 512 x 341 x 32b AFPHOTO 19708.3 KB I noticed the weird difference in file size while going through my files in a photo manager program. The AFPhoto comes up, but it's extremely smaller in viewing size (not physical size). I figured out that if I want to use the photo in presentation programs (Word, Powerpoint, etc.) I have to open the file back up in AF and export it as a JPG or a TIFF, which resumes the file to its original viewing size (5472 x 3648) I only ask, because this wasn't mentioned in the OPEN/SAVE tutorial. That, and when viewing in anything other than AF, zooming in on the file produces extreme pixelation.
  4. I'm trying to find a quick and efficient way to save modified .jpg photos by overwriting the original file. I understand that the save command does that but the file size increases to 3-4 times the original size every time I do that. I haven't got 'save with history' turned on so why this unreasonable increase in file size? Is there a way to overwrite the original file by pressing a single shortcut without ending up with an unreasonably large file?
  5. Hey Guys, great software!! But why does Affinity photo always opens up files in pixels size? It is very annoying to change from pixel to centimeter or inches all the time and all over again! The next point is when I change to file size, lets say because I scanned a photo with 3200 dpi, I want to change it to 300 dpi to print out, everything looks correct after changing but the file does´t remember???? do you have any solution?
  6. Hi, I'm really excited to join the Affinity community! I''ve been a Photoshop user for quite some time and have developed some habits I'd like to replicate in Affinity if possible. I've listed some of them below. Hopefully it's not too overwhelming... - I like the ALT+RMB shortcut so resize the brush in PS (left/right) AND adjust the pressure (up/down). Can it be setup in the preferences? - I can't seem to find a file size in the export Persona: did I miss it? I like the CTRL+Z unlimited undo: is it really unlimited or is there a max number of undo steps? That would be all for now I guess! Thanks a lot for reading until now! Have a nice day! Nicolas
  7. Hi everybody, I'm currently working on a little booklet with Designer. I know, it's not the software for booklets, but I'm not fun of Scribus, and I don't have a licence for Indesign... and I'm waiting for Serif to publish their publisher software solution. So here's my problem, the booklet is full of images (it's a little comic book) and having 30 pages more or less, the file size raised the 315 MB! Which means an average of 2 GB of RAM used right after opening the project. Only some of the images are embedded as the Assistant has rasterized them when I've used Pixel Persona to blur some areas. But I can edit the original files and re-import them as external, no problem. Anyway, the project file size is still huge. Any suggestion on how to reduce it? Any best practice for working with big files in Designer? Consider that: format is A5 all the images have a dimension that grants an average of 200dpi (shorter side is 1080px) All images are masked in order to stay inside the comic layout so they could be cropped a bit Here an image to make all this a bit more clear. In one picture you'll see that the image is masked Thanks
  8. Hello friends, Is there a way to see live the file size of the currently edited document (like Photoshop)? This information is very helpful, especially when working with many Filters and Layers. Perhaps you could somehow integrate the information into the lower right corner of the AP / AD program. It would also be useful to switch between the current document size and the memory usage by clicking on the information field. PS: This Info function I know from different CAD, Compositig and Video Editing programs "of the higher class". Greeting ChristAlix
  9. Hi! I just bought Affinity Photo for Mac. While I was trying to get used to all of the features, I tried exporting a JPG photo, taken with a D7200 and with a size of 3.2 MB and the resulting file with 100% quality and no modifications has a size of 23.36 MB. Why is this happening and what can I do? I mean, it's the same file, it's not modified but has a bigger size after exporting. I'd expect a file with the same size or at least a similar size. Thank you!
  10. Hello there, just bought Affinity Designer for Windows and was exporting some PNG test files. But the file sizes are 10 times larger or more compared to Adobe Illustrator for the same shape and size. I exported a simple 256 x 128 oval with a gradient (32bit png, Affinity Designer), that became 23.2kb same thing from Adobe Illustrator is only 2.80kb. I also tried a simple gradient at 1920 x 1080 from Affinity Designer that became a whopping 1.26 Megabyte while the same thing from Adobe Illustrator was a measly 10.5kb. Is the exporter bugged? Please note that the visual quality is indistinguishable between Affinity Designer and Adobe Illustrator(The better compression doesn't affect the visual quality). File sizes are vital to me as I am going to make art for Game Maker Studio and I need to save as much memory as I can. Thanks in advance.
  11. Hi, many thanks to the awesome Affinity Photo team :-). The application seems to offer nearly the same funcationality as Photoshop but without the subscription model. I also encountered a slow rendering of Nikon raw files, on my machine they are typically around 25MB in size. And the size of the Affinity file is very huge compared to a normal Photoshop file. When a raw file is develop and it is saved to disk without applying any filters or layers it has a size of around 410 MB, Photoshop needs for the same file only 70 MB. Regards
  12. This is going be longish but if, like me, you work extra large complex files read on ............ Yesterday there was a post that revolved around my need to work very large images which I keep down to manageable size in PS by compressing multiple layers into smart objects. I have always been nervous about how AP, without the ability to do this, would handle my extra large files. Today I decided to make some tests. (The tests are made in PS6X which is what I use and therefore need to compare with AP. It is entirely possible that later CC versions could produce better results). I took an existing PS file. It is in round figures 9500px x 9500px at 300ppi. It contains 26 smart objects each of which contains many layers when expanded for edit. The file size on disc is 3.86GB. That is to be expected with so many smart objects each of which is a discreet PSB file which need to be contained within the single master file. When opened up in PS the file uses roughly 8GB of memory and is perfectly workable although slow downs start to build up after a while. It is however, awkward, because you have to edit in ‘segments’ by opening up the smart objects for edit one by one. I ended up working like this because, before compressing the file into smart objects, it was becoming too slow and memory intensive to work very satisfactorily. To create the file I needed for my test I went through this file smart object by smart object and expanded them one by one for editing. Once opened I saved each smart objects contents to an external file. I then loaded these one by one in their layer order and combined them into a single file containing all the contents of the 26 smart objects ….. now as normal layers. The result was a very large image containing 767 pixel layers, 217 mask layers and 541 adjustment and FX layers each with its own mask layer as well - a pretty heavy image by any standards! I saved this to a normal PSD. Without the smart objects the file size came down to 1.87GB, which is to be expected. I then shut down PS and re-opened it with a clean empty memory. The new file when loaded now occupied 17GB. It was just about workable but despite there still being over 8GB of free RAM still available there were lots of delays and waiting for beachballs. In practical terms it was no longer really viable. Now comes the interesting bit! I imported the same file into AP (BTW you really DO need barometers for this I was starting to think the import had hung) and, once I had checked its integrity, I saved it in native AP form. The file created was 1.76GB, so just very slightly smaller than PS’s. But now comes the huge surprise ....... when I loaded the new Affinity file back into AP it not only loaded faster than PS loaded its PSD, but it used only a little over 2GB of memory as opposed to PS’s 17GB!! I was so flabbergasted by this I was sure I must have done something wrong ……. so I did it again ….. and again ...... four times! I got, within a few MB, exactly the same results each time. I have no idea how they have worked this magic but AP’s developers have made it quite dramatically streamlined in memory usage as compared to PS6. Here’s a summary. Image size 9500px x 9500px @300ppi. 767 pixels layers. 217 mask layers. 541 adjustment / FX layers with their own mask layers. Size on disk as PSD 1.87 GB. Size on disc as aphoto 1.76 GB Size in memory in PS V6 17 GB leaving 8GB free memory. Size in memory in AP V1.5 Beta 9 2.1 GB leaving 23GB free memory. I still can’t quite believe this but it’s wonderful news for me and has removed one of my last remaining doubts about AP.
  13. Unfortunately, this is a double submission. Please remove it, I did not find a way to remove my posting. Best regards BlauerClaus
  14. When I load 14 jpeg files into a stack, each about 2.5 MB size, and save this, the overall .aphoto file has a size of about 500 MB. Please implement to not enfold each picture internally, but just link the original files and re-enfold them with loading the files again. This may take more time, but significantly reduces file size. 500MB for a project is too big, especially in combination with iCloud and iPad. Best regards BlauerClaus
  15. Hey Guys, First and foremost, incredible job with Affinity. I've been a professional web designer for over 10 years and have tried everything under the sun to replace Photoshop. You guys have finally done it, almost! Exporting for Web I can't get Affinity to export PNG or JPG file sizes as small in file size as Photoshop can, or looking as good either. It's my only concern, since as a web designer file sizes are a huge priority. When I export the same JPG through Affinity / Photoshop at 85 Quality, the file size comes out smaller from Affinity, but looks worse. When I try to match the quality with the one exported from Photoshop, the file sizes ends up much larger. I can run files through TinyJPG/PNG but that's an extra step to my workflow. Currently, this is a blocking issue for me to continue using the program. Font Sizes When re-sizing 'type elements' specifically, you actually have to let go of Shift for them to scale proportionately. Seems odd, since you have to hold shift to re-size everything else. Perspective In photoshop I can distort the perspective of an element, which I do quite a lot when preparing mockups in devices. I noticed it in the tutorial video but can't find where to do it. Do I need to switch to Affinity Photo in order to do that? That's all for now, I'll add more as I run into it. Thanks in advance for any feedback. Best, Geoff
  16. Hello, I'm working on a document, and I think that it's too big (around 41 MB). Is there an option to make it smaller? i don't know if it's too big because of the image that it's "integrated in the document", not only an external reference. Thank you
  17. So I work in an industry that need photographic quality on store window clings for restaurants, so my photo file sized are already huge, so add that to all the adjustments multiple layers, etc. I wind up with hefty files. I made this file on Beta and I tried to open it in PS CS6 and it said it was not compatible with that version of PS. Could it have something to do with the way PS handles files bigger than 2GB- making them a psb and not a psd file?
