    @csj
There were a number of Windows fixes that were worth putting out as a 1.8.0 beta already. Designer and Photo Mac betas will come to the public forums when the Developers have made sufficient progress with features and bug fixes, such that Public input would be helpful.
As head of QA I would expect the I should think it will be a few more weeks before Photo and Designer on Mac are ready for any public testing, as they should include features/improvements as well as fixes.
If you want to know when the Mac Betas are released you just follow this News/Announcement thread you will get a notification whenever a post is made to that thread.

I'm a Mac user who has no choice but to use El Capitan as I need to use illustrator cs5 to plug the gaps of all the stuff that Designer doesn't currently do - but as theres light at the end of the tunnel, I would like to move to Mojave at some point but have the main hold back of Acrobat pro 9.5.5 and X being 32bit applications (so not Mojave compatible) - so just wondering if anyone can recommend an alternative that does all the print stuff - Check separations and ink density, Verify PDF/X standards conformance and all that, also with the ability to print nice sharp vectors and text to postscript printers for proofing purposes (something Affinity doesn't currently do), I've been searching around and theres loads of alternatives that do all the forms stuff, text edits, annotations, pdf merging, but I can't seem to find anything that will do the really important, piece of mind stuff before I send a pdf off the printers, apart from Calls PDF toolbox which is around £500

Hear hear! It's been demonstrated that a lot of nice things can be done with the brushes in Designer, but calling them "vector" brushes just because the raster images they contain follow a spline path, is entirely misleading.
Actual vector brushes (in which the brush's base artwork is vector paths) enable you to do an entire world of more powerful things:

For example, A single "Pattern Brush" in AI can be built to enable creation of a mechanically correct hex bolt of any length and diameter. As always, Illustrator's implementation could be easily exceeded in power and versatility, and that's what I want to see in Affinity Designer. Hopefully, that's what the eventual goal is (perhaps after sorting out the problems associated with the present sub-par expanded stroke results).
But it is disconcerting that the current brushes are called "vector" brushes. That doesn't suggest that what you (and I) would call "real" vector brushes are on the unpublished road map.
This is also why I am so very disappointed in the merely "me, too" treatment of arrowheads. I am convinced that a truly innovative implementation of what I call path stokes and path ends that could be combined into user-defined path styles could yield both a much more powerful "arrowheads" feature and a vector-brush feature more powerful, versatile, intuitive, and elegant than Adobe's treatment.
It would be a true game-changer even for long-time AI users who have never really discovered the kind of brush-based applications I'm talking about, just because Adobe's treatment is too "standalone" as opposed to being truly integrated with its own preexisting features of the program.
That is what I see as the core of potential advantages over Illustrator: The fact that it is a decades-old stack of newer features merely "bundled with" a bunch of outdated basic features. I see that opportunity diminish whenever I see a feature implemented in a mere "me, too" fashion, as is arrowheads.

md_berlin reacted to Carter in Vector brush vs Pixel brush?
The developers seriously need to change the name of the "vector brush" tool, as it is extremely misleading since it is essentially a pixel brush along a vector line. It really should be called something like "pixel brush on path". Those of us designing for print NEED an actual vector brush tool - you know, the ability to create custom brushes that are actually made from vectors, not raster-based images. I can't believe this hasn't been addressed... especially since it really seems like false advertising to claim your software has a critical feature that it doesn't actually offer.

Is there a way to import the app settings from the ,normal' version into the beta (or even better: use the same settings file)?
I have set up some export and colour options for Publisher and it's a bit annoying that I have to do that again for the beta, especially since Serif recommends using the beta instead of the release version because of the fixed bugs and such ...

I hope that would already become covered by the option "Text Frame" (possibly named "text elements" in the topic). In case you rather want to search within one frame only of a linked series the option "Selection" would work.

Thank you very pretty powerful search/replace feature, changing from paragraph break to line break is pretty easy.

Can we add an option to limit the search to given element, instead of the whole document? I'm thinking of options:
    * Selection
    * Text element
    * Page
    * Whole document

    Hello,
We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the final beta of Affinity Photo 1.7 for macOS.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank all users in this forum who have helped us work on 1.7 - we couldn't do it without you
Barring any last minute catastrophe, this build will ship to customers sometime next week and we will soon be back in beta for 1.7.1 - with new features, improvements and fixes.
    Many thanks (as always),
    Affinity Photo Team

    Changes This Build

    - Fixed bug where autosave files would not get cleaned up after a save & close.
    - Improved HDR merge performance when Metal compute is enabled.
    - Fixed inpainting brush when working on "Current layer and below".

    Changes Since 1.6 Release

    EDR
    - Added support for EDR displays to Photo. When editing a 32bit document, enabling EDR will switch macOS into a mode whereby it will increase the backlight intensity and darken screen content - increasing the dynamic range available when rendering content.
    Performance
    - The core processing engine in Affinity Photo has been rewritten to take advantage of the powerful discrete AMD GPUs in modern Mac hardware. It will now automatically use any compatible discrete GPU, alongside the Intel GPU support present in 1.6. Typically this improves compositing / editing performance by at least 1000%. Performance when using integrated Intel GPUs has also been massively improved.
    - External GPUs (eGPU) are also supported - including hot-plug-and-unplug support.
    - Multiple GPUs are supported - if you have more than 1 GPU (ie. Intel + AMD in MacBook Pro, or Intel + eGPU in other Macs) Photo will use them all, at the same time, to improve performance. There is no limit to the number of GPUs which can be used.
    Brushes
    - Photo 1.7 introduces a new “sub-brush” mechanism, developed in conjunction with Paolo Limoncelli (DAUB® Brushes). This exciting feature allows any brush to have a list of other brushes attached which will draw at the same time. Each sub-brush has a fully separate and customisable set of dynamics. You can control when the sub-brushes are drawn and how they blend with the main brush.
    - The brush engine in Photo has been rewritten to use the new GPU architecture described above. With GPU support, even huge brushes with 1% spacing will perform well. All brushes / brush tools are accelerated.
    - Symmetry (up to 32-way) is now supported - including on-canvas controls and optional mirroring. We have more symmetry features on the way - so stay tuned during the beta process.
    - Wet edges and accumulation are now available on colour brushes and brushes with HSL variance.
    - Brushes with multiple nozzle textures have always chosen the nozzle at random. In 1.7, the nozzle choice has a dynamic controller and ramp for greater control.
    - All brush tools now support left and right arrow keys for rotation - a common feature request.
    - Allow Ctrl key to be held when typing numbers in a brush tool (will change flow instead of opacity).
    - Fixed ABR brush import (would ignore "random" controllers).
    RAW
    - The RAW processing engine in Photo has been rewritten - producing better results and improved performance. It also takes advantage of the GPU architecture changes described above.
    - RAW files now load much more quickly - especially if you have a compatible GPU.
    - Reimplemented support for XTrans sensors.
    - The denoise algorithm has been rewritten. It produces better results and takes advantage of the new GPU architecture.
    - Hot pixel removal is now automatically performed by the Serif Labs engine.
    - Profiled lens correction are more stable, apply more quickly, and can be toggled in the Develop UI.
    - The histogram in the Develop persona is now presented in the output colour space - as opposed to always being linear.
    - Develop now respects the output profile when previewing.
    - Added support for CR3 RAW when using the Core Image engine.
    - Show which autofocus rectangles were in focus and which were selected by the camera (yellow, green respectively).
    - A large number of new cameras are supported for RAW development (we will provide a list of the new supported cameras as soon as possible!).
    - Automatically fall back to Core Image for cameras which are not supported by Serif Labs.
    Filters
    - New “Procedural Texture” filter with advanced presets support.
    - New “Voronoi” filter.
    - Denoise, Clarity and Shadows / Highlights filters have been rewritten (using technology from the Develop Persona).
    - More filters are now available as Live Filters - including the new Procedural Texture filter.
    - Live filters have been rewritten to improve performance - especially when multiple filters are used in a document.
    - Improved Polar to Rectangular and Rectangular to Polar filters.
    - Added round dot type to the halftone filter.
    - New “Lens Correction” filter - apply lens correction from the built-in lens database.
    - Bilateral blur accuracy improvements.
    Adjustments
    - The HSL adjustment layer has been rewritten. It now supports custom hue ranges, a new algorithm, new UI and picker controls.
    - The Levels adjustment layer now supports output levels - a common feature request.
    - The White Balance adjustment layer has been rewritten.
    - The Selective Colour adjustment layer has been rewritten.
    - PSD import / export of adjustments has been improved.
    - The Vibrance adjustment layer has been rewritten.
    - The Recolour adjustment layer has gained a lightness slider.
    Layers
    - Layers page - added option for transparent background for thumbnails.
    - Layers page - added multiple thumbnail size options.
    - Layers page - added ability to tag layers with a colour - including PSD round-trip.
    - Allow adding an empty group from the Layer menu.
    - New “Duplicate Selection” item in Layer menu (old behaviour). Duplicate now duplicate the whole layer ignoring pixel selection.
    - Alt / Option is now used to make a pixel selection from layer luminance. You can now also hold shift to add the result to the current selection.
    - Hide / Show / Show All Layers options in layers menu.
    - Ability to either rasterise or rasterise and trim a layer. Previously recorded macros will trim.

    Selections
    - Significant improvements to selection refinement.
    - When using selection tools with no pixel selection, default to New / Add as appropriate.
    - Added “Alpha Similarity” to Select Sampled Colour tool.
    Tools
    - Grouped tool shortcuts now default to needing the shift key held to cycle (option in preferences).
    - The Crop tool has been rewritten - it now supports resolution changes, absolute pixel size and has a much improved preset mechanism.
    - The Sponge Brush tool now gives more correct / pleasant results.
    - Allow brush rotate / size key changes while dragging.
    - Added a “Reveal Canvas” checkbox to the crop tool - defaults to off.
    - Added new “Transform object separately” mode into Move tool.
    - A general tools overhaul has been performed - providing editing of grids, guides, page origin, across multiple tools (not just in the Move tool)
    - Patch tool now supports arrow keys for rotate / scale.
    - All brush tools can now be axis constrained once brush has started - not just the pixel tool.
    History
    - “Alternate futures” for document history have been added. Traditionally, if you roll back the undo history then do something else all your changes after that point are lost. Photo will now display a small branch icon in the history tab when you do this. Pressing that button will cycle between all the different “futures” after that history entry - meaning you will never lose work you have done.
    - The History page now has an “advanced” mode - which shows thumbnails and time info.
    I/O
    - HEIF images can now be loaded directly into Photo. If they contain a depth map, this will also be loaded as a second layer. Because depth maps are typically lower resolution than the main image, optional “smart” upsampling will be performed.
    - TIFF export now has user selectable compression method.
    - Added support for 12bit TIFF files.
    - Introduced new metadata mining - completely rewritten to improve performance, flexibility and correctness.
    - Metadata is now dynamically synchronised with your document - so if you resize then export, the values will be correct.
    - Added Focal Length to metadata summary view.
    - Added a button in general preferences to open a folder from which Photo will read LensFun-style XML files - if users wish to add / experiment with their own lens profiles.
    - Support 16bit CMYK TIFF import.
    General
    - New ability to control how macros are scaled / aligned when playing back.
    - Added an “Assets” panel to Photo.
    - New cube setup mode for grids.
    - Add “Fill with Primary / Secondary” to the Edit menu for fast access.
    - The batch process dialog now fully supports expressions for height and width - available constants are “w”, “h” and “dpi”.
    - “Lock guides” added to menus.
    - Support for drag dropping .afstyles into Photo.
    - Support for drag dropping .afpalette into Photo.
    - Photo now supports custom document presets - a popular feature request.
    - A new blend mode - Linear Burn - has been added.
    - New “Move inside / outside” commands have been added - useful for quick operations on clipping masks etc.
    - The Hard Mix blend mode has been improved.
    - New provider options have been added to the stock panel - support for Unsplash, Pexels and Pixabay. All of these providers offer full-resolution stock imagery which is free to use.
    - Numerous text improvements have been made - including new features.
    - Significant stability improvements when working on non-local files (network shares, USB drives, etc.).
    - Significant PDF import / export improvements and fixes.
    - New welcome screen layout and all new samples.
    - Numerous other bug fixes - too many to list!

Why version 2, rather than 1.8, for the next step after 1.7?

    Hi LeviA,
If you create the text with the Artistic Text Tool is should enlarge as you expect simply dragging the bounding box handles. For text frames created with the Frame Text Tool you have to use the lowest handle on the bottom right of the bounding box  - the one that's actually detached from it - to scale the text. All the other handles over the bounding box will reflow the text.

    Status: Beta
    Purpose: Features, Improvements, Fixes
    Requirements: Purchased Affinity Designer
    Mac App Store: Not submitted
    Download: Here

SPECIAL NOTE: The files created by this new version of Designer 1.7.0.6 will not be compatible with earlier version of Affinity (Designer, Photo or Publisher). You will need to wait for an update to Publisher or Photo 1.7 Beta for compatibility! Please do not use this version if you will be adversely affected by this temporary lack of cross-product compatibility!

    Hello,
We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of the beta of Affinity Designer 1.7 for macOS.
Designer 1.7 is a significant change to the currently shipping 1.6 version. Files edited in this version will not be backwards-compatible with the shipping 1.6 version. As such, we would not recommend using this 1.7 version for critical or production work at this stage. It is inevitable that there were will be a number of issues with 1.7 but we hope these will be minor and aim to resolve any issues very quickly, so please use it and explore the new features, but also do keep in mind that you may find snags and we would appreciate your help with finding and reporting these to us.
If this is your first time using a customer beta of an Affinity app, it’s worth noting that the beta will install as a separate app - alongside your store version. They will not interfere with each other at all and you can continue to use the store version for critical work without worry.
It’s also worth noting that we aren’t done yet - we are still working through reported bugs from previous releases and hope to fix as many as possible before the final release of 1.7.
With all that said, we hope that you will enjoy the new capabilities introduced in this initial release and we look forward to any and all feedback you give to us.
    Many thanks,
    Matt

Please refer to previous beta updates for a full list of all changes to date. This latest update builds on the 1.7.0.5 changes and also includes the following changes:
Appearance panel should now work correctly on older version of macOS
Arrowhead flyout should draw better for older versions of macOS
    Pen and Node Tool changes:
         - Hit-test the on-curve nodes in preference to off-curve nodes
         - Added ability to redrag any selected node in the Pen tool
         - Click an end curve node in the Pen tool to remove any trailing handle (so the next segment will be a cusp), Alt/Option-click it to remove leading and trailing off-curve handles
         - Improvements to restart drag (holding space bar)
        - Create straight line segments when starting new curves with Ctrl pressed during the drag
         - Node Tool selection box mode acts like the normal mode if only one node is selected
Point Transform Tool tweaks - dragging the object anywhere inside it will snap the focal point rather than attempt to snap the object box - very useful tweak
"Lock Guides" added to the menus: This affects both tool and ruler editing/creation of guides
    PDF import fixes
On-document Grid 'widget' (to adjust origin and scale) now only offers full editing in Move Tool (to remove accidental adjustments in other creation tools) and only if the document doesn't have a cube grid setup
Fix for Printing constraint group objects with multiple lines/fills
Fill flyout no longer has a 'None' tab - instead this is just replaced with a simple 'None' button next to the colour picker on that flyout
Assets panel now allows items to be expanded again (oops!) ...
Lines with arrowheads are now drawn correctly in the context menu line preview area
Multiple lines with arrowheads will now draw each arrowhead in the wireframe outline view mode
Gradient fills on a stroke with arrowheads now draws correctly
Polycurve objects now correctly draw arrowheads on each of the curves
Temporarily remove the 'construction mode' button in Node and Pen tools.. construction mode will return in a different form in the future!
Fix for entering font name in the search area of the font dropdown causing the text to overlay the font name previously shown!

Note: I am still aware of a temporary change which caused reduced performance on certain large documents and incorrectly rasterised vector exports. This will be dealt with shortly. Sorry for any inconvenience in the meantime
