  1. I second this feature request.

In many cases I can't use the corner tool in a non destructive way. I have to bake them in, which is a real shame and keeps me awake at night. (OK you got me there!).  It's inconsistent with other tools and feels like it should be a fairly simple addition???

For the kind of work I do - I'd also find a global setting such as, 'scale all widths curves and effects with objects' (overridable on a per instance) - Which would be opposite to the default functionality we have now, I believe.

Keep up the amazing work  ;)

  2.

It's grerat to see your artwork progress and see the changes and tweaks as you made them. Great design too! Can I ask wat the reason was to shade the initial sketch with white before you went to vectors?

Thanks again for the great tip.

    George

Hi George, just how I finish the sketch process and test some very quick lighting. I'd do a whole bunch of characters before picking the one/s that get taken further. It's for my game - Storm the Train.

  3. For people who want to give it a go here are a few more tips.

    • Turn on 'save history with file' before you start.
    • Think about the background you want, you might not be able to change this later.
    • Up the amount of history that is saved in preferences, otherwise the history at the start will be removed when you go over the limit.
    • Use multiple versions of a file for different treatments. Sketch, blocking out, shading etc.
    • When recording your screen/screen section stretch out the history tab to make it very wide, you'll get finer control over the playback.
    • If performance is an issue minimise all other tabs/windows, so it's just the history - layers especially - they may try to update as you scrub.
    • Scrub slowly when recording and then speed up the footage in a video editing tool.

People like to see the creation process on social media etc, just look at the number of speed modelling vids on youtube. This could be a cool tool for users (not needing screen recording software and the performance overhead) and a nice way for Affinity D&P to be spread more widely.

Let's be honest though, it's a nice-to-have feature for a few of us, so I won't hold my breath!!!  :D

  4. Hi Malcolm,

Hmmm... well, choosing anti-aliasing ramps is always one of those 'this is better', 'no, this is better' things and I'm sure there are scenarios where you can provoke any engine to produce better/worse results... but that's not to say that we got it right. I think that perhaps the best solution here would be if I could make our renderer default to a customisable ramp until such time as it was overridden by the object settings you choose. That way, the user can change the default ramp at any point and the whole document would redraw with that new ramp. It could also be saved as the document default for future documents.

    Would that be okay? :)

    Matt

Hi Matt, Sorry I missed your reply on this been off on another thread doing 3D and promo movies for a while - Yes someway of trying different presets on an Object / Doc / App level would be amazing.

Specifically I'm struggle with small circular graphics sub 100px @72 dpi - I can't get any of it past quality control :(

I'm having to use another app to export these items which is bonkers - as no doubt you'd appreciate.

The trouble with manually tweaking the coverage map curve on items this small and perfectly round is that it's almost impossible to get it just right, the fine control just isn't there, and I'm just trying to eyeball it rather than applying any accurate/targeted maths. So some presets produced by you fine fellows would be amazing.

I'd invite your or one of your team to test with small circles/torus's as I've mentioned and if you can stomach it compare results with Photoshop and Illustrator for this specific case. I'm certain AD does a better job in other areas.

    Cheers, Mal

  5. Yeah interesting space to watch.

Whenever I'm taking my eyes off the screen (and looking down at the keyboard/moving hands off usual shortcut keys) it's breaking my flow/focus somewhat, so I'm unsure how that is better than an existing shortcuts/UI interface. Certainly the Surface Studio knob (or whatever they are calling it) seems much more connected with the users focus - as additional interfaces on expensive products go :)

Perhaps there is more merit in it if you are just working on your laptop when screen real estate is limited, rather than when plugged into a workstation - jury still out methinks.

  6. Works great!

Actually leaves the impression that the touch bar might be more useful than I thought at first.

Would be very interesting to hear from professionals using the touch bar for proper work. I watched the demo utterly bewildered as to how this was anything other than a distraction to a workflow.

Also know a few of programmers who are furious that the physical Esc key has gone from their 'pro' machine!

  7. Hi Guys,

After grabbing 1.5.3 from the MAS (may also have been in the latest beta) my export paths are broken in all my files! See attached.

It seems AD no longer likes a ' / ' at the end of a file path, but is unable to resolve it itself. I'm having to open a dialog and press the Done button to fix it, or update and re-assign presets. Not so bad for me as I mostly use presets.

Could be a lot worse for others though, wondering if there was a way to do this gracefully in the background?

    Cheers.

  8. Hi AD team,

Question about antialiasing and coverage map - I recently exported some designs which contained circles and got feedback that they looked fuzzy/wobbly/not right. Basic vector circle 84x84 pixels all aligned to the grid etc. exported as a png at 72dpi.

I could see it also so I did a comparison with what PS exports, same setup in every way (event vector circle in PS). There is a noticeable difference, the photoshop result is smoother (see attached).

I dived a bit deeper and came across post about using the coverage map to change the antialiasing/get better results on certain shapes.

    Questions:

    1. Is the appearance I'm getting from AD considered correct or have I found a bug?
    2. If coverage map is considered the way to improve this result it feels a bit heavy handed for something as simple as a circle imo. Any thoughts there?

    Cheers.

  9. Hi Malcolm - I'm desperately trying to reproduce a similar problem, but I'm not seeing this on any symbol or nested symbol scenario I can create? Turning off Syncing and modifying an attribute like colour always just detaches the colour for that particular instance, but all other attributes are still left connected... If you go to the Layers panel and hover your mouse over the description of the object in question then it should tell you which attributes are not connected. In my case, it just says 'Unlinked Attributes: Fill' and that's it.

If it's a particular file and you're happy to throw it my way then I'll look at it straight away :)

    Thanks!

    Matt

Hey Matt yes it's a tricky one, just tried to record it and it didn't happen... several attempts later... seems possibly related to editing directly after copying a symbol. Anyway video and example file attached!

  10. Matt P,

In regards to the issue of connecting multiple instances of a symbol... If I have two symbols and change the colour of one with sync off, I then can't adjust the curves (in sync) with sync back on, it kills the connection. Files that were made previously are still working though, it just seems to be with newly created instances of symbols. (instances of instances)

Anyway I know you are looking into this but thought I'd add my vote for a fix, kinda central to usage.

btw - great to see a count of selected slices and better wording - making my day easier  :D

  11. I posted the idea of reverse constraints as a feature request (https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/22706-reverse-constraints) a while ago, but haven't heard the thoughts of the developers. Maybe it's more appropriate to discuss this feature in this beta-topic since 1.5 is the first version with constraints? I'm curious to know what you think of it!

    Interesting idea.

We sometimes implement this in games when considering the size change to copy under localisation. Mostly though the design can't accommodate size changes so it's a better practice for us to work with a character limits - everywhere!

Can you think of general use cases that would make this feature useful to a wide group - that might be a good way to get an idea on the roadmap of the developers :)

  12. Symbol not being created...

    Matt P,

Have a scene in which I duplicated a symbol, detached it. Made some tweaks and tried to make another Symbol, I say tried as it won't store it as a new symbol.

If I ungroup the parts and re-group them it will make the symbol. So perhaps some metadata left when the symbol was detached that won't let it become a symbol again???

If it's of interest I can e-mail it over to you?

  13. Hi Malcolm,

I've just realised why this is... The style contains a gradient fill, but a group can't draw a fill. When you use the gradient tool on a group it actually applies the fill to all the children, but when you apply the style to the group it doesn't. When you edit the fill with the tool afterwards it will apply that fill to all the children again, so it will suddenly appear to work.

There's nothing untoward happening, but it's not being very helpful, so we can probably try to look at that. Thanks :)

    Matt

Thanks for adding this to the list.

It also feels like a bug because if I set up the style on the group - save the style - and apply it back to the same group (after clearing the setup) it exhibits the issues. Or when switching between styles on the group it appears to have not worked. So quite confusing, if the children inherited when the style is applied that would be great.

I leave it in your capable hands :)

  14. Now, it might very well just be me not realizing something crucial about this, but ever since the last two beta versions it seems like my "export selected" button simply doesn't work anymore.

I even tried deleting all slices and creating all new, but the button doesn't change, no matter how many i have ticked.

It also seems to be on more than one file i work on.

    Cheers

    Tim

Edit: Also continuous is greyed out too. Dunno if that helps

Hi, Also had an issue with Export Selected back in beta 6: #107675 Not sure if it's the same issue but I found closing and opening the app and reloading the file fixed it for me.

Additional thought - 'Export Selected' really means Exported ticked if anyone is looking at this might be worth changing the name there?

  15. @Malcolm,

I think the cropping is to due with the perceived boundary of the group but I would need one of the devs to confirm whether this is true and whether it is 'by design' or a bug.

Might I recommend a solution or two though?

You could set the stroke of the Table layer to Align Stroke to Inside and this should resolve the issue.

However, if you're using constraints, you will get much more consistent results if you define areas using rectangles with no fill or stroke and nesting content, rather than using groups or layers. This allows you to be in full control of the boundary to which the constraints are working.

So in your example, draw a rectangle the size of the area you originally wanted to cover with your Guide group and then move the four layers inside the rectangle. The constraints you have applied to the contents will now use the fixed dimensions of the rectangle for its calculations.

I'm aware I haven't addressed the problem which you are seeing, but hope the information above is helpful for the current situation.

    Thanks.

Thanks nravenlock - yep a few ways to skin this particular cat :)

Seemed like a bug to me though as it's a hidden and unexpected result of applying a constraint. Difficult to explain the hoop jumping to all users / bad UX to apply work arounds. New feature though so these issues are there to be found and I'm on the hunt!

    Cheers.
