@Joachim_L Again, thank you for your diligence and courtesy. I try to remain even-tempered when it comes to Affinity, always assuming I am the cause that everything, every manipulation or adjustment on Affinity always, always, is a big production. But after I read your posts and that of the other party, I went to Affinity Help and below have copied-and-pasted the ERASE BRUSH help section. NOWHERE can a neophyte or even a non-neophyte find, WARNING! Before you attempt to Erase anything at all, in any image you have taken the time and energy to upload, you must FIRST MAKE CERTAIN THAT THE LAYER YOU WISH TO USE THE ERASE BRUSH TOOL ON IS A PIXEL LAYER.
Dear God, for 15+ years, knowing that, being apprised of it, would have helped sooo much.
I suppose a Reset will be necessary. Sincere thanks to you, and sincere wishes for a good holiday if you celebrate it.

Make sure it is a pixel layer not an image layer

Isn't the Assistant enabled by default with the option for Erasing from vector layers to Place mask layer inside and erase? This could be also a place to check.

You can use the Burn tool to darken the hair as shown below

Thanks @Guest-354025and @Jowday - have had a quick look at the layers tutorials from InAffinity YouTube channel and will work through those in the first instance.
    Appreciate everyone's assistance to date.

Grampa Simpson had to edit a holiday picture of a lady with long chestnut hair today. As the lady arranged her hair for the series of photos in what males of the species would call a comb-over, we were surprised to find that the comb-over part, when uploaded to social media accounts, looked like she was wearing a black beret on one side of her head. Sacré black!
I used 1) Color Picker; and then the 2) Paint Brush with Opacity set at 5% (or less) to paint the chestnut color over the unnaturally darker "comb-over." However, as I anticipate editing future photographs with her hair style in the same... weft (?), I'd like to know if there's a better or additional way of equalizing any image where in real-life the color is uniform.
Grampa only wants to end the heartache and thousand natural shocks that photo-editors are heir to.
    Thank you, and hoppy halidays.

Serif have not indicated any plans to allow importation of the files from the older applications into Affinity, except by exporting the files from the old applications as PDF and importing those into Affinity.

Also, the legacy products are not supported in this forum (which is only about the Affinity suite of products). For the older Serif product range, please see this other set of forums.

Please see the attachments, where I started with a rectangular picture and a pink cloud shape.
In the first one, the picture is cropped to (i.e. masked by) the cloud shape, so the extra bit of cloud at the top disappears. In the second one, the picture is clipped to (i.e. nested in) the cloud shape, so the extra bit of cloud remains visible.
    Still clear as mud?

    American, you’re very welcome.
As Dazzler said, both methods are completely valid but I normally prefer the way I do it as it’s easier to transform and change the fill. You can also put an image (or pretty much anything else you want) into the text layer to get various different kinds of fill.
Also, you can have various fills and switch between them as necessary (in case you’re not sure which one to use).
See my attached GIF for some examples.

Odd, the method I said should work, as I did exactly what I said in a new document to make sure ... worked fine. Make sure you create the artistic text first, then switch to the gradient tool (make sure it's the one from the tool bar on the left (looks a bit like a cd with a diagonal line running out of it). Garry's suggestion is equally valid, although maybe has an extra step in creating a rectangle.

Clipping is simply a term used to describe a mask that cuts off some of the image. So in Garry's example there's a gradient filled rectangle, which has been placed inside the text layer (this can be tricky if you are new to Affinity, but you drag one layer into another - but depending on where the blue highlight sits when you are dragging tells you how it is going to combine those two layers - you want it to sit to the right and just below the text layer) - doing this makes the text into a clipping layer - only reveealing the gradient below where the text is.

Strictly speaking, masking is cropping rather than clipping. When you crop/mask, the cropping object disappears; when you clip/nest, the rest of the clipping object remains visible.

    You’re welcome.
In my example there is a rectangle layer ‘inside’ the text layer.
The rectangle layer is clipped to the outline of the text so only the parts of the rainbow that are ‘inside’ the text outlines show through.
The text still has a plain black fill but the rainbow gradient rectangle overlays that fill. The text and rectangle are ‘independent’ but working together.
Does that explain it a bit better?

Every now and again I sit through a few more tutorial videos but there’s so much functionality in Photo it’s going to take me a long time to see even a small portion of it, and I’ll probably forget most of what I’ve seen (or can’t remember where I saw it to go back to check the instructions). Thank goodness for the forum members, many of whom have helped me out of various sticky situations.

To remove the white background from a placed image you can:
    * Select the image;
    * Choose menu “Filter → Colours → Erase White Paper”.
(The image will automatically be converted to a pixel layer by the assistant.)
Note: All white on the image will be removed (turned transparent) so you may have to be careful with it.

Create a double-sided arrow. Make sure it is selected. In the context toolbar, change one of the ends to not be an arrow.

@walt.farrell Oh, dear... I never said I wasn't brain-ally challenged. Thank you. I have so many questions I need answers to this week, and I'm spacing them out. This is my final workspace question for now. Thank you again!
