Tudor - please don't try and promote a plastic sheet as a solution to a bucket with a hole.  Several people have also commented in response to your suggestion to the effect that this is treating the symptoms. Default folder X does a real-time SCREEN CAPTURE and RENDERS AN INTERFACE AROUND THAT WINDOW! - It is a hideous patch. - If you like it then fine, enjoy, but stop distracting from the root issue here.

In order to add its overlay to the existing native OSX finder window, it needs to do a realtime screen capture in order to render its clunky interface in the right location. It's far from ideal! and it is not a good solution to this problem.

There I was with Affinity 1.10... Hoping...
From within my own little organised folder structures. I open a simple jpg in affinity...
..."save as" and "export" completely ignores the source path for that simple little jpg - as if it is completely unimportant.
If Affinity made a car, it would be a fantastic drive, efficient.... economic...
....but you'd have to clamber in and out through the boot every time.
    *Sigh*

I have asked them about it on their Facebook Group - Commenting on their posts is the only way to do it:
    https://www.facebook.com/affinitybyserif
    and on their twitter:
    https://twitter.com/affinitybyserif
If we keep asking about it then they might move it up their to-do list?

Ouch indeed - I hadn't realised this simple request had been over four years in the asking.

Just come to affinity after 15 years with adobe and Quark etc - On MAC OS.
Really enjoying the experience with the UI and tools.
As this thread suggests - I would sooo much like to see save as options:
Same as source  Recent Other Fav folders Wood :-)

I really like Affinity but I'm losing so much time with this wired SAVE AS, I've to go back to Adobe! What a shame

I just joined the Affinity, bought everything they make in order to switch from Adobe. Checked ton of things beforehand, and then BUM, back to Stone Ages on fundamental feature. Discussing with designers if this is necessary is borderline stupid. It is more functional and that is it. Being silent and not acting for years on this topic is just plain mean.
Affinity, what is wrong with you people, this is not even a feature this is a bug. Who and for what reason is preventing this mistake to be corrected? Answer this to the community of your users.

Ok - Understood - I agree with Samuli's comments - Default Folder is a clunky workaround that doesn't really do the job and it needs to screen record to render it's GUI correctly?!?
Serif just need to prioritise a mod to the Save and export Code, push it to all 3 apps and we will all be smiling in our current working folders :0)

I think most people who use this forum know how to create folder and structure their files to their liking. ( I don't think you even need to be creative to do that.  )
Most GUI editors (of text, image or audio etc) out there will by default give the option to save any derivative or exported file in the same folder as the source file currently open.
Even MS office does it on a mac!  Its basic usability. Don't make the user do stuff if they don't need to...
..and if the user does want to save elsewhere, then there are all your fine time-saving suggestions above 🙂
The point of this thread - the behaviour of the save/export dialogue in all of the affinity Apps
Back to Philipp (P10n')s initial Post Suggestions way back in 1967:
1.) Save As:   Default to the folder where the current file lies.|
2.) Export (pdf etc, but also for palettes):    Default to the folder where I last exported the respective file type when the current document was open.

    Hi @Wood,
what works for me is to use the new 'Select Object' in the latest beta version. It offers e.g. 'Select Stroked Objects and this does exactly this. Expand stroke then works on all objects at once.

    Hi jmnvro,
I also back the tourbox. They need to download the driver and tourbox console to make it work. Already set it up with Affinity Photo and work fine. I thought it was difficult before, but it only takes me 10 mins to configure. Share the dict to you. Wish it can help.

Thanks for that, but am I right in my thinking that if I "export" or "save as" a file that was loaded from a source file in folder XYZ, DefaultFolderX would not automatically default to save it in folder XYZ. This solution is no faster than my current work around of always keeping a finder window open in the current working folder and dragging a folder from Finder cmd+Tab into the affinity save dialogue to select the what-should-be-default-anyway destination folder.
If any new file of any format is loaded from XYZ folder, then XYZ has be the current default folder for all saves and Exports.
you have your sidebar favourites there ready if you don't want this.
A 3rd Party solution is not a solution to this very Affinity-specific folder management oversight.
I'm not knocking DefaultFolderX though 🙂

In Windows if nothing else the default location for saving should be the user's proflle folder not C:\Windows\System32

Yes, this also sounds very reasonable.
I very often need to use the "expose in Finder" menu just to get my working folder so that I can drag it into the file-save dialog. (BTW, most Mac apps show the current folder when you right-click on the icon in the title bar - this would also be a useful thing that Affinity apps are currently lacking).
I think we all agree that the current behavior is only useful in a minority of usecases, and it is at least unusual compared to most other apps. Pity, because I really love the Affinity apps for most other respects.

Yes, more options for the directories (defaults, as common defaults) are needed.

    - Save Affinity file to same location as the opened file by default, unless otherwise pointed elsewhere.
    - Export file to same location as the opened file, unless pointed elsewhere.
    - Remember different Export and Save As -directories per file opened (file from C: doesn't get offered being saved where file from D: got opened)

It would be nice to be able just unpack package full of image files, open to Affinity Photo and save file and get it saved to "Affinity" directory after pointing in first save time. Then get export as well saved to "Export" directory after pointing the first time there.

It would speed up the processing multiple files in same directory (detect the directory path is it same as "Session" or is it as "Project".

I was really disappointed this wasn't fixed in the last update. Seems so obvious as the way it is right now wastes so much time.
