APPLY SPOT COLOR TO GRAYSCALE IMAGE IN PUBLISHER

Recommended Posts

I am able to save an image in grayscale (.TIF) format in Adobe Photoshop.  Then place it into InDesign and change the color to any spot color by selecting the image with the Direct Selection Tool.
Is that action possible with Affinity Photo and Affinity Publisher?  I have attempted to duplicate the action, and it does not seem to work.

Thank you!

In Photo, I change the color space to RGB. The photo is still gray but I can now add the spot colors as needed

Just place the greyscale image into Publisher and add a Recolour Layer.

Mac Pro (Late 2013) Mac OS 12.7.6
Affinity Designer 2.5.5 | Affinity Photo 2.5.5 | Affinity Publisher 2.5.5 | Beta versions as they appear.

I have never mastered color management, period, so I cannot help with that.

Recolor layer is not working. But using a global color from color palette works fine.
I'm using this workflow with Indesign and Bitmap images as well. In Indesign the image has no white background color when imported and can be recolored using a spot color from palette.
On import it's the same in Publisher with grey scale images - if you exported a TIF with transparent background, this is preserved. But as soon as you recolor it, the alpha is gone. Is there a way to preserve alpha channels? And I'm not talking about overprinting/multiply. This works of course.

I placed a 300 dpi grayscale TIF in Publisher and, with its appropriate layer active, selected a Pantone Coated swatch and it performed as expected. TIFs colorized with Pantone 185C.

Note that the bitmap TIF did not perform as desired. I don't think Affinity apps support black and white bitmap files, especially not B&W bitmap TIFs. ?

See attached screenshot of Document Setup. Also attached are the TIF Options chosen upon save in case that has an affect on file performance.

Best regards,

Carl
