Publisher does not recognize WORD .docx files!

I don't want to throw the thread off topic again, but I was finally able to do this, I think, after a session of playing around with Regular Expression searches. The Find term that finally appeared to work as I wanted was (.+) (that is, left paren, period, plus, right paren) -- remembering to specify the style to be replaced. The Replace term was \1 (backslash, numeral one) -- similarly, remembering to specify the intended style.

@SlateGrey This looks promising. Would you be able to provide an example of the appropriate expression please? I'm not very familiar with regular expressions (though I know they're very useful). What would the expression look like to replace, say, Body1 with Body (in my case Body1 is the style created when I import Word text, Body is the existing style I want to use).

Well after trying it a few times, I am going to stick with PP X9 for the remaining few years ~I will be doing DTP work.

@djb21au Here is what worked for me (see screenshot below). There appears to be a bug regarding which paragraph styles you can actually choose, though (see the thread below) so it may or may not work for you right now depending on which styles you're "allowed" to choose from.

Brilliant, thank you. In my case I found the normal find and replace of paragraph styles is working. I didn't know that was there.

"look forward to finding a way to remove some of the default styles"

Right click on the text style - then near bottom  - delete.

I'm rather out of touch with the latest versions of dtp programs, being retired, but I've had experience with PageMaker, Ventura, InDesign and PagePlus, so I've had a cursory glance at Affinity Publisher and it seems to be that it has a great deal of promise.

I'm glad to see that the 'Place' feature includes text files, although I think it should be able to import Word files, a program which I dislike but which is used by a great many people. The problem with placing rtf files is that paragraph styles don't seem to be imported as well and I always depended a great deal on paragraph styles when I was doing layouts of both books and magazines.

The program which offered the most straightforward use of paragraph files was, in my experience, PageMaker. No matter what word processor I was using, all I had to do was place the name of the paragraph style contained by the greater and lesser than characters – <Title>, <FirstPara>, <Body> and so forth – at the beginning of a paragraph and when PageMaker imported the text file each paragraph automatically adopted the features I had assigned to that style. In addition each style, such as <Body>, was also applied to each following paragraph until a new paragraph style was inserted. All I needed to do was to ensure that I had as 'clean' a word processing document as was possible.  When I had to switch to InDesign this feature wasn't included and I had to use the word processor's paragraph style feature and hope that InDesign managed to import each style's features, which it seldom did straightforwardly and, as far as I can remember, always ignored italic and bold text.

I suppose it's too much to ask that Affinity adopt PageMaker's feature for dealing with imported paragraph styles...

I need to import .docx files and do not want to resave them as RTF. Briefly, please -- what file formats can be used for import or drag-and-drop?

It might be me? As an artist-photographer, not a pro. publishing specialist. Accidentally imported draft .pdf book file and was shocked it seemed to work so easily and well. But then very surprised that .docx and rtf files say not recognised. Will have to live with that; unless it has been implemented and I have not found it?

Readers of this thread may like to look at the new public beta build #305 on Mac and Windows for our first beta to include docx import . Here is an excerpt from the release notes.

Quote

DocX Import

DocX is now offered as an option for import wherever txt and rtf were previously available (for example File > Place). It is chiefly designed with import of text content in mind.

Due to the wide variety of docx documents out there we will inevitably encounter issues and indeed there are a features we won't initially support, for example:

  • DrawingML
  • Fields
  • Footnotes and Endnotes
  • Multi-page tables

If you have docx documents that are failing to import we would encourage you to share them with us if possible.

Please use the Publisher beta bugs forum, not this suggestions thread/forum. Thank you for your help improving Affinity Publisher

I am seriously impressed by first look at Build #305. (WORD import) - it even makes a pretty good stab at rows, columns & even tables (imported in error on my part:/)

Thank you Serif developers.
