Simon Blackwood
Hi, I'm brand new to the whole Affinity world. What I'd like help with is opening raw files. On my laptop they are simply the file names with no preview image. Does Affinity have the equivalent to a Bridge to help me make my choices? Regards, Si. Staff Dan C Posted August 14, 2018 Staff Share Posted August 14, 2018 Hi Simon Blackwood, Welcome to the forums Could you please confirm the camera model your RAW files are from? Are you using Windows or Mac? Simon Blackwood
Hi, yes... Canon 7D, CR2 files. Using Windows. I opened an image randomly from the memory card, though I would like to make a better judgement on which images I'd like to open.
Staff Dan C Posted August 14, 2018 Staff Share Posted August 14, 2018 Thanks for that. You need a specific codec created by Canon to view the images as thumbnails or in a preview such as Photo Viewer on Windows. I've checked on the Canon Website here and I receive the following: A quick search through Photography forum threads show other users looking for this and being unable to find an alternative, unfortunately you can only hope that Canon update these codecs soon to support your camera on Windows. walt.farrell
You could try the Fast Picture Viewer codec pack, which is currently on sale for $9.99. I opened an image randomly from the memory card, though I would like to make a better judgement on which images I'd like to open If you're running the latest version of Windows 10, the codec required to view Canon 7D .CR2 raw files in Windows File Explorer should already be installed by default. Up until around mid 2016, camera codecs were added to Windows 10 automatically by Microsoft via Windows Update, which meant Windows File Explorer would display CR2 raw files natively without the user needing to do anything. For some reason Microsoft stopped updating the codecs around mid 2016 (I think Windows 10 1607 was the last version that contained the latest camera codecs). Therefore, Windows File Explorer will natively display raw files for cameras up to the Canon 80D (which was announced 2016 Quarter 2), but it won't display 5D Mk IV or later cameras (which was announced 2016 Quarter 3). The 7D was announced in 2009 and the 7D Mark II was announced in 2014. Therefore if you're running Windows 10, it may be worth posting a screenshot. Is it just CR2 images, or other image types as well? Dan C
ApvdG
I have the same question / issue. Opening a new image and selecting a folder with only raw files gives me ... : Indeed a rather huge disappointment and quite a surprise for such a good quality photo editing software. Any other suggestions ... ?
Staff Dan C Posted August 15, 2018 Staff Share Posted August 15, 2018 Hi ApvdG, As explained above, this is a compatibility issue between your RAW files and the operating system and not Affinity, could you please let us know your camera model and operating system? stokerg 1 Quote Please note - I am currently out of the office for a short while whilst recovering from surgery (nothing serious!), therefore will not be available on the Forums during this time. ApvdG
Olympus omd10 mark3, windows 10, plus example ORF file attached. P8030205.ORF
Staff Dan C Posted August 15, 2018 Staff Share Posted August 15, 2018 Thanks for that! Unfortunately Olympus have not released a codec that supports your camera on Windows 10, so as above you will need to use third party software. Olympus offer their own viewer application, but I don't believe this will affect your thumbnails within Explorer. It currently costs $9.99 US. ApvdG
Thanks for finding out and letting me know. I bought the software, but it did not work for me ... Still only a logo shown for each Rwa photo. I informed them and waiting for an answer. Still waiting ...
