brad
i like the software. but it seems to be lacking in font manipulation. you can only write straight ahead. theres no commands or procedures to shape fonts or groups of them into predetermined forms. i tried to make a logo where the word travels upward in a curved diagonal pattern. to say your competing with adobe anything this seems to be a very disappointing drawback. has anyone ever manipulated fonts in this way? using this program? Hokusai
Brad, What version are you using? The latest beta version (free to those who have purchased the Mac App Store version) has text on a path as well as some other text options. I recommend to give it a try. Affinity Designer is continually growing in terms of features and power. Affinity Designer can compete with Illustrator in many areas (Designer does many things better than Illustrator if you ask me), sure there are some places where Affinity Designer isn't quite there yet but it is a really new program and it is still maturing. Give it time, things are being added and improved very quickly. Best of Luck, Hokusai
Staff MEB Posted March 2, 2015 Staff Share Posted March 2, 2015 Hi brad, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) You're probably using the trial or the MAS version which are currently more limited in text manipulation than the latest Beta. With that said Affinity obviously doesn't support all the features Illustrator offer. It only has six months of life compared to more than two decades in Illustrator case. I advise you to take a look to our roadmap, to get a better idea of what's planned for the next months and download and install the latest Beta. It still has not the ability to fit text in pre-defined forms but it's already able to place text along a path, and has some new tools not included in the MAS version yet (Corners tool, dashed lines...). Most of the features included in our roadmap will be free updates to the app. Note that files saved or created with the Beta cannot be opened in the MAS version until its updated too. Dave Harris
If "fit text in pre-defined forms" means text style sheets, then that should appear later this year. If it means text frames with arbitrary shapes, that's available now. Create the shape and use Layer > Convert to Shaped Frame. (I forget whether this is in the trial version, but it's definitely in the current beta.) If it means text along a path, that is in the beta too. Staff MEB Posted March 2, 2015 Staff Share Posted March 2, 2015 @Dave i believe @brad is talking about warp effects - applied to text in this case - as in Illustrator (keeping the text editable). Below is an image of how text displays (in white) with an warp effect applied (there's several) on the canvas. When you mouse over it with the text tool, the text (in blue) appears letting you edit the text locally, then the warp effect is automatically re-applied. There's also controls to change the warp effect independently from the text, allowing you to make it flow in a myriad of ways. Those dynamic effects can be applied to shapes as well. Not necessarily text. Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
jmca62
Is there a way to make glitter fonts with Affinity?
Staff MEB Posted July 25, 2015 Staff Share Posted July 25, 2015 Hi jmca62, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) If you're referring to the text effect, i'm almost sure it's possible, but as far as i know, nobody have posted something similar in the forums yet. That would be an interesting challenge... Quote A Guide to Learning Affinity Software
peter
Is there a way to make glitter fonts with Affinity? I don't know the answer to this but...these are my initial ideas. What about designing a brush, with glitter (write with glitter method) Using a jpeg of glitter, then using your text with no fill - but with a thick outline (pastry cutter/die cut method) Write your text, then convert it into a stencil type mask. The letters are now holes (mask/stencil method) HTH peter Quote MacBook pro, 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, NVIDIA GeForce 9400M 256 MB, OS X 10.11.6 http://www.pinterest.com/peter2111
karend
The easiest way I have found to create a glitter font is to download a digital glitter paper and copy the open digital file, type your font in Affinity and then remove all colour from the font. Paste or place the the glitter paper in your document - resize so it fits and then send it to the back. Then create a clipping mask (drag the paper to the text layer) your font will now be glitter. gkao
I've been looking for info on how to do the text warp in AD, similar to this post and https://forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/topic/264-shaped-text-request/. Information on text warp for AD has been hard to find in the web, but there's plenty of info on PS. Help within AD didn't give any useful info either. Can someone explain how this is can be done? @Dave i believe @brad is talking about warp effects - applied to text in this case - as in Illustrator (keeping the text editable). Staff MEB Posted December 7, 2015 Staff Share Posted December 7, 2015 Hi gkao, Welcome to Affinity Forums :) This is not yet available in Affinity Designer. That example is from Illustrator. There's already a couple distortion tools planned (check our roadmap for more info), but it still may take a while until they are ready.
